The verdict is finally in for JJ Lehto’s boating accident, and he has been sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison. New F1 driver record? :(

Completely misread that as ‘LL Jehto’ for a second…

He’s planning to appeal, and he’s not yet gone to jail. But I don’t know what his grounds for appeal are; the case seems pretty clear-cut. The injuries he sustained strongly suggest he was at the wheel of the boat when it crashed, while his friend, who died, had injuries suggesting he was the passenger. I’m just translating from the Finnish stories I’ve read, because I’m sure the majority on here don’t understand the language.

The story is up on the Finnish state broadcaster YLE’s English language news website now: http://yle.fi/uutiset/news/2011/12/ex-f1_racer_jailed_for_fatal_boat_crash_3104542.html

It appears that both JJ and the prosecutor are going to appeal the decision, neither party are happy with the current situation. The case will now go to Hovioikeus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hovr%C3%A4tt), the second highest judicial body in Finland. No news when and how long it’s going to take, but my guess is at least six months.

Sorry for bumbing such an old thread, but the trial is back on in Hovioikeus (the second highest judicial body in Finland).

Nothing major happened on the first day. JJ still says he remembers nothing of the crash while the court visited the site of the crash. Here are some pictures of the boat.

And the verdict is in: JJ Lehto has been freed of all the charges. Hovioikeus determined that it’s simply too unclear whether JJ was driving the boat or not; hence no conviction.

The prosecutor is considering lodging an appeal to the highest court in Finland (Korkein oikeus).
