Actually something my wife asked (and yes it is very unusual for her to be in the same room as the F1 is on).
Has the safety car ever crashed while leading the cars around the circuit?
I could understand if it was pouring with rain and the track was flooded, but has it ever happened on a dry circuit?
Dont know about F1 but it in WTCC it crashed into the race leader,
I was at Monaco in 2000 and the Safety Car crashed into the barrier during a parade lap a few minutes before the race start.
As Ratboy says the most memorable example is in the WTCC.
And don’t forget Heidfeld hitting the medical car at Interlagos in 2002
Liuzzi almost swiped the safety car in this carnage:
During the track inspection before the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji (the one where James Hunt won the world championship), the course car aquaplaned off the track. Bizzarely they still saw fit to start the race – something that would never happen today.
I love the way he taps that tractor-crane. Thankfully it was just a tap!
