Yes, Piero “The Silver Fox” Taruffi won his first and only GP at the first Championship race of the season. Ascari did not compete in it because he was off qualifying for the Indy 500, the only F1 driver to race at Indy while it counted for the Championship. In the 60’s, after he retired, Taruffi wrote a great book called ” The Technique of Motor Racing “; I have it :-)
