The absolute worst one I’ve ever seen was Hakkinen losing the 2001 Spanish Grand Prix. Final lap. Heart breaking.

Public roads, plenty of gradient, next to a 200m drop (gorge to the left). Iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in the background. All across park land. Even passes a bloomin zoo.

One flat out back-straight, several very fast kinks, fast curves, a hairpin etc. It has everything. It even looks like it used to be a ~70’s circuit – It was made for it.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the 2014 British Grand Prix at Bristol.

I’ve got both BBC and Sky so I chose this time to stick to BBC, see what it was like.

Can’t really say much about the BBC warmup/forum…I’ve not watched them in years because of all the best-mates-on-a-night-out top-gearesc banter. I find all the forced chemistry beyond awful. Like the snippet at the end where we see Jake and Hamilton racing RC cars – spare me.

The BBC grid walk was hopeless, embarassingly bad. The less said about that waste of time the better.

The BBC commentary team is not great. They still do the most annoying thing a commentator can do – say things like ‘This race is going to be fantastic!’ etc. Don’t try to big something up, we can make our own minds up about it. I lost count of the amount of times Coulthard said that in 2011, only for the race to be dull as hell.

I’m sticking to Sky next time.

To those moaning about the Sky analysis – no TV analysis is any good. Some bother trying to do it (BBC) and some just clearly don’t (Sky). Visit on F1Fanatic/JAonF1/JoeSaward/Autosport on a Monday morning for a proper, well thought out analysis.

@Ral – that’s EXACTLY what I’ve got with my parent’s Sky deal. I’ve got an HTPC that’s streaming Sky. I couldn’t care less about the ~30 second delay, it’s live.
My impressions about their whole presentation – fine. No real complaints and nice to have a change really.

With Sky I get Brundle, Crofty, TK, a new take on the same action – things like the music and interview soundbites on the warmup laps, a little arcadey but actually pretty good.

Ok, so Damon and the lead presenter were a little wooden in their bland shirts and the dolly cheapens things a tad…but it’s a whole lot better than Jake, EJ and DC all doing some chummy, pseudo-relaxed and painfully scripted feature.

Also, once you’ve been watching F1 for 20 years – you really can’t stand to watch yet another feature on tyres, pit-stops or steering wheels. I’ve not bothered watching any of them for a good two seasons.

So basically, sky give me the people I want and it’s included in my usual TV package anyway. Hence, goodbye BBC F1. A good effort while it lasted until all the politics, top-gear style interviews and that utter prat EJ got involved.

It would have been brought up before…but did anyone else lose weeks from their life by playing F1 Grand Prix Manager 2?! That was a cracker.

I’m sure if you look around some dark corners of the internet, someone will have it for download.

Back in around 2000 I lost countless months of my life playing this…

The video intro brings it all back. It was 99% official (apart from the usual Jaques Villeneuve pseudonyms) and actually quite challenging. The graphics were damn good for their day too. It also worked well with steering wheels.

Later they released F1 Racing Sim 2 which also appeared on the Dreamcast. Graphics were improved but they lost the names, hence you were racing as “Michael Schmidke”.

F1 Racing Sim by Ubisoft easily gets my vote and yes I would not be surprised if nobody else has ever heard of it!

Well actually to make the sequence fit, it would be Silverstone as that was probably the fastest circuit in 1977 after they started going to the Hockenheimring…

Oh, is it that Monza used to be the fastest track, until it was modified, then it was Spa, until that was modified, then it was the ‘Ring and now it’s Monza again?!

They’re all older circuits that have been added to the F1 calendar (in that order) and modified to be progressively slower. Next A1-Ring?

Oh and btw…it’s great to see proper racing, no toys like DRS etc etc.

Absolutely remarkable video. Great choice of music, especially for the action. Indeed I have never seen it work well for elongated action to epic kudos.

I especially like the Robin Williams//Steven Spielberg hybrid in the pits.

    More please…

To be honest I didn’t really mean you (Keith) do it. I’m sure there will be folks out there willing to spend time moderating posts if you assign them an account capable of doing it.
