You have it fairly good coming from the south. There is plenty of parking at the Longueuil metro station (if you find Longueuil metro on Google maps you will see that it is surrounded by parking). You can then take the metro one stop to be at the track. Most people will be going in the other direction so you don’t have to worry too much about crowds.
As for tickets. For most grandstands you cannot buy single day tickets. You have to buy 3 day passes so your options are somewhat limited. You can buy single day General admission tickets or single day tickets in the new popular grandstand which used to be grandstand 22 (as bad as that stands location is, I would get it over GA). Your other option is to keep an eye on e-bay for people selling single day tickets to grandstands or take your chances buying tickets off the many scalpers who will be at the metro exits. I have no idea what they charge and it would be a bit risky turning up to the race without knowing if any tickets are available.

For the 747 bus you can check out the schedule on the stm.info site. There is a stop at the corner of René Lévesque and Bishop which will be closest to Crescent http://www.stm.info/en/info/networks/bus/shuttle will get you directly to information about the 747. Click on the direction then the stops for the schedule

That is good advice from S2G-Unit.
Personally, I would stay away from Crescent for dinner. Great for a drink and a party but for dinner I would be looking for something more relaxed. After a long day in the sun watching racing I usually want a bit of chill time before I get back into the party. I haven’t hung out in the old port during a gp weekend but I imagine it would be a better environment for digesting. If you want to eat closer to Crescent, there are plenty of restaurants just south of St. Catherines on Crescent, Bishop and de la Montagne which will be good but a little quieter.
I always take the Metro to the race. Being a Montreal resident, I buy a monthly pass anyway. I only find the crowds to be crazy on Sunday after the race. If you are staying close to downtown then the ferry might be best but, if you intend buying a weekend pass for the metro, I would put up with the crowds.
To each his own, but no matter how you go about doing your weekend, you will have a great time.

@ strunk27 backpacks are fine. The seating space in the grandstand will restrict how big it can be because it will have to fit under your seat, but other than that feel free to bring in packs loaded with beer or whatever you need.
In terms of the protest I would say that you are likely to encounter some in some form or another as any protesting grop is likely to use the Grand Prix as a way to get some publicity for themselves. Having said that, I wouldn’t expect to be blocked from anything and you should be safe. It might just get noisy. But if you are here for the Grand Prix you should be able to handle that. But as you say it is hard to predict.

I have always sat in the stands but I had a look through my photos from Friday 2011 to check out the GA situation for you. Relaxed is definetely not the word to use.
I sit in Stand 21 so I have a view of 24. Between 24 and 22 there is a very good spot and it will be crowded all day every day. On the other side of 24 doesn’t look so bad bt still penty of people especially for F1 sessions. Can’t comment on other GA areas obviously but I would suggest hunting out a Grandstand ticket for Friday. I assume there are plenty of locals who have to work Friday and want to sell one day of their Grandstand pass.

Hi Captain. Both those stands are good. This year will be my fifth in 21 but I have watched a Champ Car race from 24 back in the day. I don’t know how high UU is but the view from high up can be better in my opinion. For non F1 sessions you can probably just go and sit in the front row anyway.
A good thing about the hairpin is that the support series have their pits behind Grandstand 15 so you can go for a wander and get some good photos of historic F1 cars, Ferraris etc in your lunch break.
The advantage of 21 over 24 is that it is closer to the exit which can make a big difference after the race when five or six grandstands worth of people try and squeeze out over the bridge.
