These are a theoretically great data source, Keith, but can you please please add a manual scale option for the y-axis? This particular chart format makes comparing Button with anybody else essentially impossible since his 203 second lap 36 squashes any other lap variation into nothingness.

Personally I’d love it if none of the pit stop laps were included at all (or alternatively, if there was an option for this). I’m not sure how easy that would be to produce, though.
The chart already says “very slow laps excluded” – I wonder which those are?

@ilanin I’ve filtered out the three slowest laps to help with that. If you’ve got a suggestion for new functionality please post it here:

This shows the Maclarens at least have some sort of pace (even if the car is not great yet).
Just out of interest what happened to Massa with regards to his unsafe release into Perez? On sky the commentators said it was as obvious an unsafe release as you can get without having a crash… Perez had to slam his breaks on! Yet no mention of it anywhere that I can see…..

I don’t think it does – I think what it shows is how meaningless fastest lap is now! Perez only achieved it because he bolted on new tyres two? laps from the end and reaped the benefit of the extra grip.
I think we’d only see it being meaningful if points were available for it, as they have been in the past.

It shows that they are not a million miles away, along with how well Button would have finished (if he had all his wheels….) I am not saying it shows they are the fastest, but to get a fastest lap at all (after all it was also ony 6 laps after Massas fastest lap) and the fact that both Perez and Button are in the top end of the table shows that the car is probably not quite as bad as they thought in Australia.

They’ll be back to winning ways in a couple of races. I just wonder what they did to the car. Huge difference in performance from the car identical as it was in Melbourne. They probably played a bit with balast and obviously played well. Shame for Jenson, he drove a good race…

Great stats, but I can hardly distinguish the lap times between the teammates. It would be better if the colors for teammates were a bit lighter and darker respectively.

The first two medium stints of Mercedes were very encouraging, though I’m not sure whether their pace was a little bit flattered by not having enough fuel in the car. I suspect that wasn’t such a big factor in lap time, especially since Rosberg was tight on fuel but not that tight. When Lewis peeled off into the pits on lap 31, wasn’t he so close to Sebastian he almost ran into the back of him?
It’s a shame then, that for the second race running Mercedes do well on one type of tyres but not so great on the harder compound.
With regard to the final stint, although I was personally happy to see Hamilton get his first podium for Mercedes, a different team order, to release Rosberg immediately at the beginning of the final stint, would have made more sense. Perhaps he could have troubled the fighting Red Bulls. I suppose it’s harder, though, to issue a team order to let someone by than it is to hold position.

@adrianmorse “When Lewis peeled off into the pits on lap 31, wasn’t he so close to Sebastian he almost ran into the back of him?”
I’m sure it looked more dramatic than the drivers experienced it. Anyone at that level has so much control over the car and where it is that they are able to drive within a few cm’s of another car without hitting it. Only if the grip level or speed is suddenly changing a lot they misjudge and collide.
Regarding team-orders, I think the teams must acknowledge that they hire overambitious hot shot egos who would sell their mother on ebay if it would bring victory. What we witnessed was perhaps a lesson of the difference between a 3 times World Champion and a highly talented driver, who needs a “Brawn”-event strike of luck to get a title. A team should learn not to issue commands, which doesn’t stand a chance in the order of execution in the very independent mind of the driver, who is influenced by adrenalin, high pulse and an inherent feeling that number 2 is just the first of the loosers.

It’s interesting that WEB and VET fastest lap is only 2 tenths apart, on the same lap and after their last pitstop… So they were on the same page regarding the engine, neither of them turned it down or they were both with it down…

You are looking at the wrong part. Where you are looking Mark had turned his engine back up already. It’s the period just prior to that where Vettel consistenly etched away Mark’s 4 sec gap with a higher engine setting.
The overtake was made with the same engine settings, but the gap was closed up with higher engine settings. Compare that last pit-stop period with the 2 former dry pit-stops and you will see the difference in consistency.

Excellent page, a wealth of information. But why are the “very slow laps” excluded from the dataset? Is there any way to include these slow laps?
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)

Because they would distort the rest of the chart making it difficult to read.

Yes, I suppose I see your point. Slow lap times would appear as terribly high spikes in the graph, making the other (regular) lap times less discernable. I’ve also found the other statistics page where “gap” times are listed, so the slow lap times can be computed accordingly. For example, Jenson Button’s 36th lap was an incredibly slow 3:23.141. Not sure what happened there — I know he had the wheel problem, but that occurred much later in the race…. Thanks for your reply.
