The 2014 season will soon be upon us and F1 Fanatic has all the information you need to get ready for the new year of racing.
Drivers, teams and engines line-up so far
So far 19 of the 22 places on the F1 grid for 2014 have been taken. Here’s a summary of the confirmed changes:
- Mark Webber had left F1 and his place at Red Bull is taken by Daniel Ricciardo
- Ricciardo’s vacant place at Toro Rosso has gone to rookie Daniil Kvyat
- Another rookie, Kevin Magnussen, arrives at McLaren in place of Sergio Perez, who has moved to Force India
- Perez’s arrival at Force India has left Paul di Resta without a seat.
- This is because Adrian Sutil and Nico Hulkenberg have swapped places, the latter returning to Force India as the former moves to Sauber
- Another driver returning to a former team is Kimi Raikkonen – he is back at Ferrari who he left in 2009
- Raikkonen replaces Felipe Massa, who has moved to Williams
- Completing the circle, Pastor Maldonado moves from Williams to take Raikkonen’s place at Lotus
Drivers will also be able to choose their numbers this year. You can find details of who’s chosen what so far here.
Three teams also have new engine suppliers:
- Mercedes will supply an extra team next year in the shape of Williams
- Williams’ supply of Renault engines will now go to Toro Rosso
- Ferrari also have a new engine customer, Marussia, as Cosworth have departed

Still backing up Williams, hoping for some revival.

If could be interesting between Williams and McLaren next year with both using customer Mercedes engines. Since the days when these teams dominated F1 in the early 90s it has often been a case of one having a top works engine whilst the other doesn’t with Williams dominating with Renault and McLaren having a long run of success (though not always titles) with Mercedes and Williams having a brief spell of moderate success with Mercedes.
With both having the same engines next year and with entirely new car designs being required it will be a straight fight between their engineers which should be a good indication as to whether Williams has still got it.
In terms of the other variables it’s also quite close, each has an experienced driver with race wins and a title fight under their belt both of whom are considered top drivers but not all-time greats. Both are backed up by young hot-shots (Bottas clearly will have more F1 experience but McLaren clearly think that Magnussen is something special and with major technical changes existing F1 experience may not be as useful as normal).

“Mark Webber had left F1”
You’re just pouring salt on the wound aren’t you?
J/K, but the gird just wont seem complete with out him. :-(
obviously

Yeah, he was so good. Now, with Massa no longer with Ferrari, there won’t be a top team where one driver is hammered into oblivion by their teammate.

meh…doesn’t bother me

I’ll keep stubborn about this and skip the season. I’ll see it again when it becomes F1 again, not a reality show.

@omarr-pepper Oh come on! if there is one season you don’t want to miss is this one, new engine for the first time in years, new driver lineup in every team except Mercedes, a pair of highly talented rookies, intra team rivalries in Ferrari, Force India, Mercedes, maybe even Red Bull?
Don’t let a ridiculous rule spoil the fun, anyway If you are like me in the end you’ll just give up and watch the races again, the question is how long you’ll last? :P

@mantresx this will be for me tougher than the movie “40 days and 40 nights” but let me try ;P

What would make it more interesting is graphics showing how each car could perform if it had enough fuel and if the tyres allowed the driver to actually race . It would allow me to moan incessantly with a far greater degree of accuarcy.

The season starts so soon. It’s weird not having to wait month upon month, before being able to see F1 cars!
Less than a month till the first Jerez test! I wonder when the teams will start announcing their launch dates, it’ll be interesting to see the 2014 cars. However, with such drastic changes I’m sure the launch cars will be very different to the ones they test, let alone the Melbourne ’14 spec cars.

In previous years some teams waited until the second pre-season test to reveal their new cars but that won’t be possible this year. I’m excited that EVERY team will be rolling out new cars in just a few weeks.

That’s what I’ve been searching for with no results… Nobody seems to want to show us what the cars will look like… Could they possibly bolt the V6 in the ’13 cars and run the first test?… Obviously kidding but you never know whit those guys…
Do you have any ideas Keith???

“Mercedes will supply an extra team next year in the shape of Williams”
Justo to clarify a bit, it should say: “this year”
I guess you probably took it from a draft you had already written when 2013 was ending… :s
