2014 German Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Hockenheimring, 2014Lewis Hamilton was told he was in no rush to get past Jenson Button moments before the costly collision which potentially cost him second place in the German Grand Prix.

Hamilton damaged his wing when he mistakenly believed Button was letting him past, as he pointed out on the radio afterwards.

That eventually led Hamilton to switch to a three-stop strategy. Team mate Nico Rosberg, who was having a far less eventful race at the front of the field, was able to get to the end with just one further stop.

But many other drivers found it necessary to convert to a three-stopper. Kimi Raikkonen was among them – shortly after being told he needed to do four more laps on his current set of tyres he was quite insistent that was not possible.

Late in the race a misunderstanding on the radio at Red Bull meant Sebastian Vettel was not saving fuel as quickly as he needed to at the end of the German Grand Prix.

There had been confusion between him and race engineer Guillaume Rocquelin on more than one occasion during the race as they tried to keep on top of the fuel limit.

A similar situation unfolded at Sauber, where Sergio Perez was reminded in no uncertain terms about the importance of saving fuel. It was a difficult race for the Force India driver, who at one stage was given a power boost to aid his attempt to pass Jean-Eric Vergne but wasn’t able to overtake the Toro Rosso.

Perez’s plight was good news for team mate Nico Hulkenberg, who had problems of his own in the middle of the race. His race engineer reported he’d beaten his team mate by half a minute after the chequered flag fell.

Lap* From To Message
PR Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas So clutch-5, Valtteri. Clutch-5. We’ll stop now and do the adjust on the front wing, minus one. And then we’ll just have to see if you can feel if that’s made a difference. So we need to cool but you could push for Turn 12 if you can.
PR Andrew Murdoch Felipe Massa OK Felipe. If we can do some lift-and-coast for this second half of this lap, just try and save a bit of fuel.
PR Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Steering wheel looks a little right-hand down… should be OK.
PR Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK, copy that.
PR Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Brakes are smoking quite heavily already. Front-right.
PR Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK, copy that. Temps are… normal. In the range. But probably need a bit of cooling.
PR Xevi Pujolar Unknown Ollie? It’s Xevi. Can we go down another 0.5?
PR Unknown Xevi Pujolar Copy that, I’m looking up tyre pressure [can't understand] if we have something.
PR Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg It’s a tail wind into turn two at the moment. A tail wind into turn two.
PR Unknown Xevi Pujolar Xevi, just for info, low oil pressure on the other car by half a PSI.
PR Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas OK, as you’re on the front row, the pit limit should be off. You should be in Mode-12. RS mode; lower RS slick only. Should be in blend-3. Torque-1 and then pre-select blend.
PR Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg So, 16kph tail wind into turn one at the moment.
PR Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton [In] P2, the wind was a tail wind into turn one. P3 yesterday morning, the wind was a tail wind into turn six and today it’s almost a tailwind into six. It’s slightly running to the left as you get out of Six.
PR Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington OK. So, the car’s quite strong in the higher-speed. I didn’t go to higher speed six, it was there already. But even in high speed six, there’s quite a strong front-end in, like, 12 and…
PR Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Affirm. High speed six is about 40 percent unlocking, so you can lock it up fully or lock it up a lot more, six, seven or eight. It’ll be fully locked at about nine. But…
PR Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Just want to speak to… so we’re taking two holes out? Just want to be careful that we’re not taking too much out, Bonno [Bonnington]. Because we’ve got two holes down from where we were.
PR Unknown Lewis Hamilton So that’s one hole for the different tyre, one hole for balance.
PR Lewis Hamilton Unknown OK. And do you want to do that slightly lower pressures to pull it forward just a little bit? Let’s do that.
PR Unknown Sergio Perez OK, Checo. That’s 30 seconds. Commence the bite-point finds now. Two bite-point finds.
FL Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce I think grip was quite OK. Think we can go a bit deeper on the clutch.
FL Bernadette Collins Jenson Button OK, Jenson. Purple C2, position seven. Purple C2, position seven.
FL Unknown Nico Rosberg We’re looking for five burn-outs, please. Five burn-outs.
1 Kevin Magnussen Mark Temple The race begins but the Safety Car is immediately deployed as Massa rolls at Turn One
I can’t see my front wing but suspension feels OK. Left-front tyre is a little damaged.
1 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen OK, understood. Drive to your delta. Must be positive.
2 Andrew Murdoch Felipe Massa Felipe, are you OK? Felipe are you OK? Felipe, if you can call me back, are you OK?
3 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Daniel, did you have any contact?
3 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie No contact, just had to avoid it.
3 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Yeah, we saw that mate. Well done avoiding it. Obviously, puts us a little bit back. But let’s get focus for the rest of the race. We are not boxing, we are staying out.
3 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Ricciardo is contesting being ahead of Maldonado when the Safety Car was deployed
We both obviously feel we were ahead. I was definitely ahead when I saw the ‘SC’ boards, so just get some clarity with Maldonado please.
3 Pastor Maldonado Mark Slade The race has resumed
Need to know which is my place. Is it behind the Sauber, or behind the Red Bull?
3 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado OK, Pastor. You’re shown as being behind the Sauber at the moment, in front of the Red Bull. I will check.
3 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado OK Pastor. Do you think Gutierrez overtook you under the Safety Car?
3 Pastor Maldonado Mark Slade I don’t think so.
3 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado OK. In that case we think you’re in the correct position.
3 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Let’s make an amazing recovery.
4 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen OK, Kevin. Strategically, we’ve still got a good chance in this race. We are ten seconds behind the queue.
4 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg So, gap to Bottas behind is 1.8, so looking after the tyres. Front temperature, rear temperature 15. And also, go forward on brake balance to help rear tyre slip.
5 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Got understeer.
5 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Think about putting brake balance rearwards.
5 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen OK Kevin, we should catch backmarkers in two laps. Yellow golf six. Yellow golf six.
6 Xevi Pujolar Jean-Eric Vergne OK, good job there, Jev. Close the gap with Raikkonen now.
6 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK Daniel, let’s get through these cars as soon as you can. Next car behind you is Hamilton, he has made his way through the traffic.
6 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Checo, focus on the exit of turn 12. We’re losing two tenths on the exit of turn 12 alone, OK? That’s where our time loss is at the moment. Let’s have a balance update when you can.
6 Sergio Perez Gianpiero Lambiase So far is going OK.
7 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg So try diff entry three for understeer. Tyre temperatures still 15.5 both front and rear, stabilised.
8 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Hamilton is pressuring Ricciardo
Remember, you can hold the ‘overtake’ to defend as well.
8 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce There’s so much high-speed understeer, it’s incredible.
8 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Copy that, Nico. Copy that.
8 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Hamilton is told he’s 25kph faster than Ricciardo in front of him when he uses the overtake mode and DRS.
You’re free to use overtake, you have 25kph with DRS.
9 Jenson Button Tom Stallard Is overtake working?
9 Tom Stallard Jenson Button Yes Jenson, overtake working. Pace is looking good, pace is good.
9 Jenson Button Tom Stallard I tried to use it across the start/finish line but doesn’t seem to be doing anything.
10 Daniil Kvyat Marco Matassa Kvyat has spun after contact with Perez
OK, he [censored] my race.
10 Sergio Perez Gianpiero Lambiase What is he doing?
10 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Do you have any damage? Do you have any damage yourself?
10 Sergio Perez Gianpiero Lambiase I don’t think so.
11 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen OK, Kevin. Some cars in front are starting to pit. If we can make good progress on this stint, then we can be in with a shout for some points.
11 Unknown Unknown Not working you’ll have to use G3, G3.
13 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg And Nico just confirm -.4 for [soft] tyres next stint.
13 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Affirm affirm.
13 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis looks like some of the [super-soft] runners are struggling with front-left graining. Stops will start happening soon.
13 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Stuck in a lot of traffic.
13 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Yeah copy that Lewis. We just need to make sure we get to the end.
14 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Checo to keep you updated at this stage we think it’s best overall for us to stick to plan at the moment. Is the graining clearing up at all on the front-left?
15 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado And we will be racing Hulkenberg at the pit exit.
16 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Respect the white line on the exit, you’re racing Hamilton and is coming into turn one now.
17 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Do I have to save fuel?
17 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Negative. Negative, Lewis. We are good on fuel.
17 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK and fail-5. Fail-5, fail. OK, that has affected upshifts. That’s something we need to do.
18 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Bottas, two tenths faster, sector two. You’re forcast P2, even if Bottas overtakes.
18 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Despite the performance boost Perez was unable to pass Vergne on the track.
Yellow chassis six, position two. That should be a step up in engine performance, Checo. You have four laps of it so let’s try and clear Vergne.
19 Valtteri Bottas Jonathan Eddollls Small drops of rain hit visor.
19 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Copy that. Nothing big on the radar at the moment. Nothing big on the radar.
20 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Hamilton is under pressure from Bottas, who has fresh tyres
OK Lewis, it’s not critical, keeping the postion. We just need to make sure we get this stint length. So you will be target lap, or target lap minus two.
23 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen And Kevin, you’ll have to switch to ‘golf three’, where you would’ve used the overtake, and then switch back to ‘golf six’.
23 Kevin Magnussen Mark Temple It doesn’t work. It doesn’t switch on when you switch these.
23 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen So, it won’t make the overtake button work, but if you switch to ‘golf six’ on the start fin– ‘golf three’ on the start/finish line and then leave it there until turn six, that will give the extra power.
23 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Perez has been warned to save fuel – he was hoping rain at the end of the race would mean he could save fuel later.
Checo we need to lift and coast please.
23 Sergio Perez Gianpiero Lambiase What about the rain at the end then?
23 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez We can’t be certain about that at this stage. We cannot be certain. We cannot rely on the rain, so please lift-and-coast. That’s the last time I’m going to ask you, OK? I will not repeat it again.
24 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK, Button ahead is on the same age Primes. Button is doing 23.2s, you are catching him.
25 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel We need to try to increase the gap to Alonso.
25 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin Yeah, tell that to my rear-left tyre. Car’s really poor braking for turn two.
25 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Understood.
25 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, if we go to menu magic, position one. Menu magic, position one. Menu magic, position one. There’s no rush, this is just for the pit stop.
25 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington I’ve never heard of that switch. Which one…
25 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton [Interrupting] OK, don’t worry about it mate. Don’t worry about it. Just leave it.
26 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Really struggling with the rear.
26 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg We’d like to come down to EB1, but no more forwards on brake balance. And try diff mid-5 as well.
26 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, so box, box. Box, box. We’ll be going plus-one, same tyre
27 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil Adrian, is that your pace, or could you go quicker if you don’t have to defend?
27 Adrian Sutil Marco Schupbach I can’t go quicker!
27 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil OK, OK.
28 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu Grosjean has pulled off circuit
There is a problem with the power. Problem with the power. No power.
28 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Scenario-11. Scenario-11. Scenario-11.
28 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu Still no power. Still no power.
28 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean OK, stop the car. Stop the car. Stop the car please.
28 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu Unbelieveable. What’s happened again?
28 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean We lost the car’s pump, I think. OK, car is safe Romain. Very sorry about that, you were doing well.
28 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce Hulkenberg was able to keep going despite this problem with his engine.
Engine is not running smoothly any more.
28 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Stand by Nico, stand by, we’re looking for a driver default.
29 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce Car’s really slow. I have an alarm, the up-temp.
29 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Yeah that’s…
29 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce I can’t clear it.
29 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Chassis switch to position two.
29 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce I am in two! But I can’t do anything because I’ve got the alarm. It’s, like, blocked.
29 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Yeah, yeah move the chassis switch backwards and forwards. Back out of two, back to two.
29 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Driver default-01. Driver default-01.
29 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce It doesn’t take it. I’m not coming there because of the alarm.
29 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Copy that, Nico.
31 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Hamilton has caught Button.
Am I in a rush to get past him?
31 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Negative, Lewis. Negative.
31 Jenson Button Tom Stallard Hamilton and Button collide at the hairpin, leaving Hamilton with front wing damage.
Hamilton just hit me at the rear.
31 Tom Stallard Jenson Button Understood, Jenson. Understood.
31 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Damaged my front wing. I thought he was letting me past. I thought he was letting me past. He went really wide, so…
31 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK, no worries Lewis. We’re looking at the data. Everything looks OK at the moment.
31 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington I’ve lost quite a bit of downforce on my front wing.
32 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington It looked like he was letting me past, right?
32 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Affirm, Lewis. Did to us.
32 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Is there anything we can do? Can’t afford to change front wing, right?
32 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, we’re going to look at the strategy. We’ll just see where your pace is. We’re going to calculate something and see what we can do for you.
33 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen And Kevin, nice job getting past Kvyat. We need fuel-7, target zero on the dash. Fuel-7, target zero.
34 Kimi Raikkonen David Lloyd The left-front is very bad. Very bad. It doesn’t want to turn the car at all.
34 David Lloyd Kimi Raikkonen We need another four laps on this set. Four laps.
34 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Struggling with the rear and graining on the front now.
34 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Copy copy.
34 Kimi Raikkonen David Lloyd Agitated
We have to stop! We have to stop! The front-left is completely gone! We are losing [unclear]
35 Jenson Button Tom Stallard You need to give me info on what our plan is.
35 Tom Stallard Jenson Button OK Jenson, you are P8. Hulkenberg in front is yet to pit, as is Ricciardo. And our plan is to run this tyre. We are still Plan-A.
36 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen OK Kevin, car in front is Maldonado. You’re one second a lap faster than him.
37 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Left-front is already struggling.
37 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Come on, Checo. We need to get past the Sauber. And then settle down into this stint. Traffic is costing us graining as well. Adding to our problems.
38 Jean-Eric Vergne Xevi Pujolar I’m losing so much time, I’m struggling like hell.
38 Xevi Pujolar Jean-Eric Vergne Understood. Stand by, we’ll let you know.
38 Xevi Pujolar Jean-Eric Vergne OK. Box now, Jev. Box.
39 Max Chilton Gary Gannon I’m trying everything here! The car’s giving me nothing, it’s so unbalanced.
39 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Lewis, at the stop, we’re thinking we’ll try and add as much balance as we can with the wing that you have. It will lose us time if we change the wing.
40 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Really struggling with the left-front now.
40 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK mate, good job. Let’s catch up with Button now. You’re minus four, Button.
41 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Hamilton front-left mage meant his tyre was wearing more quickly, eventually leading the team to abandon his planned two-stop strategy.
How many laps have I done on this stint?
41 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Twelve laps. Twelve laps on this tyre.
41 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington This front-left is not going to last.
41 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis we’ll have to start looking at other options then.
41 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Bottas pits from second
You’ll be racing Alonso and Vettel. They’re just coming into Turn 1 now.
42 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Sebastian, we need a little bit more fuel. A little bit more fuel.
42 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin Tell me what you want. Do you want me to pass or you want to save fuel, like a duck?
42 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel We just need a little bit more fuel. Target plus 02. Respect the beeps in turn 13.
43 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, so box, box. Box, box. Push as much as you can. We’re splitting this now.
43 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado OK Pastor, now it’s really crucial that we make these tyres last. The cars around us…
43 Pastor Maldonado Mark Slade Copy.
43 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado We think the cars around us are doing extra stops.
43 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Hamilton pits for Super Soft tyres
OK Lewis, so you’ll be on 13 lap stints, we think. Thirteen laps. So we need to manage them. We will need to manage them, but we should have good pace.
44 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg So for information, Nico, Bottas is the next car. He is on Super Softs, so we think he is on a different strategy to you. So just important, look after that left front.
46 David Lloyd Kimi Raikkonen So at the moment, if we go to the end, it’s going to be difficult or maybe possible. Fernando is going for a three-stop, definitely. Magnussen will have to stop again.
46 Kimi Raikkonen David Lloyd OK, but would have been nice to know earlier.
47 Daniil Kvyat Marco Matassa Kvyat has pulled off circuit with his engine in flames
Loss of power. Loss of power.
47 Marco Matassa Daniil Kvyat Understood
47 Daniil Kvyat Marco Matassa Park the car, Daniil. Park the car. No gearbox. No gearbox. Switch off the engine. Switch off, Daniil. Switch off. P1 immediately. There is fire. Jump off the left-hand side. Fire.
48 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg And we’re not expecting any rain before the end of the race.
49 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Is my pace good enough?
49 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Yes Lewis. Pace is good. Pace is good.
49 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce Give me a little information on the race. Who are we racing? What position are we racing for?
49 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg OK, so Ricciardo, you are racing, who is behind. He has just stopped. He’s on Soft tyres, seven laps newer than your Soft tyres. You are plus six seconds to Ricciardo. Plus six seconds.
49 Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce What position are we racing him for?
49 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg We’re in P7 at the moment, but Button ahead is likely to stop again.
50 Adrian Sutil Marco Schupbach Sutil has spun at the final corner and the Sauber is stranded on the circuit
There’s something wrong on the car. Something’s wrong on the paddle.
50 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil OK. Understood. Pity.
52 Gary Gannon Max Chilton Still yellow, turn 17. Sutil’s car is still there on the inside. Still yellow, turn 17.
53 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Give me feedback on the tyre from your side.
53 Valtteri Bottas Jonathan Eddollls Feels like we can make it to the end, but it’s not going to be easy. I’m not going to be able to push.
53 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Copy that. So just keep managing the pace to get to the end. We need to manage the pace now to get to the end.
54 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Bottas is zero on your pit window. Bottas zero on your pit window.
54 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK, so you’re pulling Bottas inside your pit window.
54 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So you’re still reeling in Bottas, he’s well inside your pit window now. Keep doing– we’ve got double yellow now. Double yellow. Caution, car on the track.
54 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So, caution. Marshalls on track. Yeah, affirm Lewis.
54 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington Do I need to be pushing and killing my tyres, or?
54 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, so you’re still pulling the cars in. You’re still pulling the cars in your pit window. So what you’re doing is just good. So regardless, we are going to the end on this set So that’s going to need some management. We’ve got 15 laps to go.
55 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez OK, Kimi is in. Kimi and Magnussen in. Push, Checo. You’ll be racing Kimi. You’ll be racing Kimi.
56 Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen OK Kevin, we can push these tyres to the end of the race. Keep targetting zero on the target dash.
56 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Bottas is seven seconds down the road. You are 1.8 seconds a lap faster.
57 Tom Stallard Jenson Button OK Jenson, so we’re racing Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg, four seconds behind.
58 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Bottas, five seconds ahead. You are one and a half seconds a lap faster. So Lewis, this should be an easy catch. We just need to get the tyre to the end.
59 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas For info, next car behind is Hamilton. He’s about 1.2 seconds a lap faster. Let’s not race him hard, we need to get this tyre to the end. Let’s not race him and kill this tyre. Just look after this tyre and get to the end.
59 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg We believe Button may be staying out. His tyres are eight laps older than yours. Eight laps older than yours.
60 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Just be aware, Magnussen is a lapped car, but he is slightly faster than you at the moment on super soft tyres. He’s two seconds behind.
61 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Sebastian, we need target 0.02 until the end. Fuel target 0.02 until the end, required.
61 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin Am I doing 0.04? Please confirm.
61 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel That is correct. Which is too much. This is too much, we need a smaller number.
61 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel OK, Sebastian, now we need more. We need zero on the dash. We need zero on dash.
61 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas So you can use the ‘overtake’ to try defending. Use ‘overtake’ to try defending if he attacks. But just bear in mind we’ve got to get this tyre to the end.
62 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK so we’re going to charge up the battery where we can’t get overtaken and then you can use overtake to defend.
63 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas So you can push a little bit harder. Tyres are looking OK. Little risk from behind, so let’s try and protect against Hamilton.
64 David Lloyd Kimi Raikkonen There could be some drops of rain in a minute or so. It should be very light.
65 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg So we’re plus 16 seconds to Button behind. Plus 16, so we should be comfy.
65 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington He’s too fast on the straight.
65 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Yeah, affirm Lewis. Don’t forget he had DRS on that straight.
66 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Fuel now minus zero two. We need more and more fuel saving, Sebastian.
66 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin Yeah, I’m burning all I have.
66 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel We need to save fuel! We need to save fuel!
67 Jenson Button Tom Stallard I think we… well, we got the strategy a little bit wrong.
VL Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Great drive, Nico. Great drive! Well done!
VL Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Woohoo! Yes! Thank you! Thanks a lot, guys.
VL Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Really well done, well controlled. Most cars were on three-stop – you managed it with a two-stop… Incorrect information, Bottas also on a two-stop.
VL Paddy Lowe Nico Rosberg Absolutely brilliant drive, Nico. Well done. Well done.
VL Nico Rosberg Paddy Lowe Thank you, Paddy.
VL Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Amazing! That was fantastic! Beat a Mercedes fair and square! Unreal. Great drive, Valtteri. P2.
VL Valtteri Bottas Jonathan Eddollls Phew! Thank you. They still were a little bit too quick, but glad to keep one of them behind. Thank you guys, again really really solid job.
VL Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, great drive. Great drive. Excellent recovery from P20. Could’ve been a little bit better, could’ve been a whole lot worse.
VL Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Good job, Sebastian. Good job.
VL Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin OK, sorry for the misunderstanding there at the end.
VL Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel That’s alright.
VL Christian Horner Sebastian Vettel Well done, Sebby. I think we got everything there was out of that. Well done. Some great moves there – the one on the inside of Alonso, that was big kahunas.
VL Sebastian Vettel Christian Horner Thank you guys. It was a tough afternoon. Obviously we didn’t have the pace that we expected. So still plenty of work ahead.
VL Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Good effort, mate. Very good recovery from where we were. Unforunately the race wasn’t one lap longer, but obviously we said the opposite last week. Good effort mate. Good drive.
VL Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Thanks guys. That was a fun battle.
VL Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg OK, well done. Plenty of pickup on the tyres on the way in. P7, Nico. P7. Mode 12. Mode 12.
VL Nico Hulkenberg Brad Joyce Good, thank you. Hard work that was. I don’t like to say it, but the car was an absolute dog today. The balance was nowhere. It was really bad.
VL Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Copy that Nico. I’m sure a lot of other cars were struggling out there as well. Our pace looked good, especially for the strategy we did. And we finished 30 seconds ahead of Sergio.
VL Tom Stallard Jenson Button OK, Jenson. Well done mate. That was pretty tough. Fuel’s OK so normal inlap, please. Normal inlap. Switches are good.
VL Jenson Button Tom Stallard Thanks for your hard work, guys. Sorry it didn’t really come to much, but… yeah. Good job.
VL Tom Stallard Jenson Button Cheers Jenson. Well done. And sorry it was tough, but we’ll do better next time.
VL Mark Temple Kevin Magnussen Obviously that was a bit of a disappointing result. P9. We were on for a very strong position at the start. Didn’t see what happened at the beginning, but I think you drove a good recovery to P9.
VL Kevin Magnussen Mark Temple The thing with the first corner, not much I could do, I think. Anyway, good job this weekend.
VL Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez And P10, in the end. P10.
VL Sergio Perez Gianpiero Lambiase Not our race then.

I think that it was Antonio Spagnolo this time in Kimi’s pit radio, not David Lloyd.

  2. Lap 58 – Peter Bonnington ==> Lewis Hamilton: Bottas, five seconds ahead. You are one and a half seconds a lap faster. So Lewis, this should be an easy catch. We just need to get the tyre to the end.

    No it wasn’t Bonno :-p

  3. F1WithMySon (@f1withmyson) said on 23rd July 2014, 17:46

The call for “Menu magic, position one” was funny, and Lewis sounded utterly befuddled.

  4. Yuriy said on 23rd July 2014, 17:46

Which one…

    This one is funny :)

I’ve heard Rosberg being asked to use the magic button in previous races, so obviously its on one car and either it has a different meaning on the other car or it doesnt exist and is just a code that means nothing

  5. Guillaume Rocquelin >> Sebastian Vettel “We need to try to increase the gap to Alonso.”

Sebastian Vettel >> Guillaume Rocquelin “Yeah, tell that to my rear-left tyre.”

This was the most fuel-saving dominated race I can recall this season. I don’t think it adds anything to the proceedings.

I think it’s interesting no radio on Alonso about his last lap on 8th gear.

Interestingly, the Ferrari team radio (particularly Alonso’s communiques) is conspicuous by its absence in most transcripts.

    • Given the several seasons long “Mystery of Fernando’s Missing Messages”, it would be more interesting and surprising if there WERE any such radio transcripts!

    @keithcollantine
there is tiny typo in article above.

A similar situation unfolded at Sauber, where Sergio Perez was reminded in no uncertain terms about the importance of saving fuel. It was a difficult race for the Force India driver

Should say “A similar situation unfolded at Force India…”

Tell me what you want. Do you want me to pass or you want to save fuel, like a duck?”

Ducks are well-known for being economical with their fuel…

“And we finished 30 seconds ahead of Sergio.”

I find stuff like this very interesting, a little pat on the back for the Hulk! I also like that Horner calls Vettel “Sebby”…

Love these transcripts, thanks a lot.

The Unknown to Unknown about G-3 *may* be someone at McLaren – notice how Temple tells Magnussen to switch to “Golf-3″ later.

  12. A.P. said on 24th July 2014, 6:44

I feel that another way to interpret “That’s the last time I’m going to ask you, OK? I will not repeat it again” from GL to Checo is that GL is apologetic about this and is telling Checo that he will not ask him to lift-and-coast again. So this is the last time he will have to conserve fuel but afterwards he can go racing again. Maybe SP was irritable about having to conserve fuel at that stage – obviously the plan was to wait for the rain.

That conversation between Hulk and Brad Joyce on lap 29 is fun to read.
F1 can never a run a campaign for “do not text while driving”, can it?

  14. Vishal JAIN said on 24th July 2014, 8:48

OK, Checo. That’s 30 seconds. Commence the bite-point finds now. Two bite-point finds.

    What are bite points?

“18 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Bottas, two tenths faster, sector two. You’re forcast P2, even if Bottas overtakes.”

Here is a clue on something totally wrong with f1 today, drop the radios and strategy computers then put all in-race strategy decision on driver alone instead of deciding the result at lap 18.

Yeah to much tech and not enough mechanics. Engineers are controlling the drivers. I wonder what would happen if you put back the clutch pedal in the foot well ?
