Lewis Hamilton was told he was in no rush to get past Jenson Button moments before the costly collision which potentially cost him second place in the German Grand Prix.

Hamilton damaged his wing when he mistakenly believed Button was letting him past, as he pointed out on the radio afterwards.

That eventually led Hamilton to switch to a three-stop strategy. Team mate Nico Rosberg, who was having a far less eventful race at the front of the field, was able to get to the end with just one further stop.

But many other drivers found it necessary to convert to a three-stopper. Kimi Raikkonen was among them – shortly after being told he needed to do four more laps on his current set of tyres he was quite insistent that was not possible.

Late in the race a misunderstanding on the radio at Red Bull meant Sebastian Vettel was not saving fuel as quickly as he needed to at the end of the German Grand Prix.

There had been confusion between him and race engineer Guillaume Rocquelin on more than one occasion during the race as they tried to keep on top of the fuel limit.

A similar situation unfolded at Sauber, where Sergio Perez was reminded in no uncertain terms about the importance of saving fuel. It was a difficult race for the Force India driver, who at one stage was given a power boost to aid his attempt to pass Jean-Eric Vergne but wasn’t able to overtake the Toro Rosso.

Perez’s plight was good news for team mate Nico Hulkenberg, who had problems of his own in the middle of the race. His race engineer reported he’d beaten his team mate by half a minute after the chequered flag fell.

Here are all the team radio messages which were broadcast during the German Grand Prix.

Lap*FromToMessage
PRJonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasSo clutch-5, Valtteri. Clutch-5. We’ll stop now and do the adjust on the front wing, minus one. And then we’ll just have to see if you can feel if that’s made a difference. So we need to cool but you could push for Turn 12 if you can.
PRAndrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Felipe. If we can do some lift-and-coast for this second half of this lap, just try and save a bit of fuel.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonSteering wheel looks a little right-hand down… should be OK.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK, copy that.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonBrakes are smoking quite heavily already. Front-right.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK, copy that. Temps are… normal. In the range. But probably need a bit of cooling.
PRXevi PujolarUnknownOllie? It’s Xevi. Can we go down another 0.5?
PRUnknownXevi PujolarCopy that, I’m looking up tyre pressure [can’t understand] if we have something.
PRBrad JoyceNico HulkenbergIt’s a tail wind into turn two at the moment. A tail wind into turn two.
PRUnknownXevi PujolarXevi, just for info, low oil pressure on the other car by half a PSI.
PRJonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasOK, as you’re on the front row, the pit limit should be off. You should be in Mode-12. RS mode; lower RS slick only. Should be in blend-3. Torque-1 and then pre-select blend.
PRBrad JoyceNico HulkenbergSo, 16kph tail wind into turn one at the moment.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis Hamilton[In] P2, the wind was a tail wind into turn one. P3 yesterday morning, the wind was a tail wind into turn six and today it’s almost a tailwind into six. It’s slightly running to the left as you get out of Six.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonOK. So, the car’s quite strong in the higher-speed. I didn’t go to higher speed six, it was there already. But even in high speed six, there’s quite a strong front-end in, like, 12 and…
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAffirm. High speed six is about 40 percent unlocking, so you can lock it up fully or lock it up a lot more, six, seven or eight. It’ll be fully locked at about nine. But…
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonJust want to speak to… so we’re taking two holes out? Just want to be careful that we’re not taking too much out, Bonno [Bonnington]. Because we’ve got two holes down from where we were.
PRUnknownLewis HamiltonSo that’s one hole for the different tyre, one hole for balance.
PRLewis HamiltonUnknownOK. And do you want to do that slightly lower pressures to pull it forward just a little bit? Let’s do that.
PRUnknownSergio PerezOK, Checo. That’s 30 seconds. Commence the bite-point finds now. Two bite-point finds.
FLNico HulkenbergBrad JoyceI think grip was quite OK. Think we can go a bit deeper on the clutch.
FLBernadette CollinsJenson ButtonOK, Jenson. Purple C2, position seven. Purple C2, position seven.
FLUnknownNico RosbergWe’re looking for five burn-outs, please. Five burn-outs.
1Kevin MagnussenMark TempleThe race begins but the Safety Car is immediately deployed as Massa rolls at Turn One
I can’t see my front wing but suspension feels OK. Left-front tyre is a little damaged.
1Mark TempleKevin MagnussenOK, understood. Drive to your delta. Must be positive.
2Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaFelipe, are you OK? Felipe are you OK? Felipe, if you can call me back, are you OK?
3Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoDaniel, did you have any contact?
3Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieNo contact, just had to avoid it.
3Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoYeah, we saw that mate. Well done avoiding it. Obviously, puts us a little bit back. But let’s get focus for the rest of the race. We are not boxing, we are staying out.
3Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieRicciardo is contesting being ahead of Maldonado when the Safety Car was deployed
We both obviously feel we were ahead. I was definitely ahead when I saw the ‘SC’ boards, so just get some clarity with Maldonado please.
3Pastor MaldonadoMark SladeThe race has resumed
Need to know which is my place. Is it behind the Sauber, or behind the Red Bull?
3Mark SladePastor MaldonadoOK, Pastor. You’re shown as being behind the Sauber at the moment, in front of the Red Bull. I will check.
3Mark SladePastor MaldonadoOK Pastor. Do you think Gutierrez overtook you under the Safety Car?
3Pastor MaldonadoMark SladeI don’t think so.
3Mark SladePastor MaldonadoOK. In that case we think you’re in the correct position.
3Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieLet’s make an amazing recovery.
4Mark TempleKevin MagnussenOK, Kevin. Strategically, we’ve still got a good chance in this race. We are ten seconds behind the queue.
4Tony RossNico RosbergSo, gap to Bottas behind is 1.8, so looking after the tyres. Front temperature, rear temperature 15. And also, go forward on brake balance to help rear tyre slip.
5Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonGot understeer.
5Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonThink about putting brake balance rearwards.
5Mark TempleKevin MagnussenOK Kevin, we should catch backmarkers in two laps. Yellow golf six. Yellow golf six.
6Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK, good job there, Jev. Close the gap with Raikkonen now.
6Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK Daniel, let’s get through these cars as soon as you can. Next car behind you is Hamilton, he has made his way through the traffic.
6Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezCheco, focus on the exit of turn 12. We’re losing two tenths on the exit of turn 12 alone, OK? That’s where our time loss is at the moment. Let’s have a balance update when you can.
6Sergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseSo far is going OK.
7Tony RossNico RosbergSo try diff entry three for understeer. Tyre temperatures still 15.5 both front and rear, stabilised.
8Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoHamilton is pressuring Ricciardo
Remember, you can hold the ‘overtake’ to defend as well.
8Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceThere’s so much high-speed understeer, it’s incredible.
8Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that, Nico. Copy that.
8Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton is told he’s 25kph faster than Ricciardo in front of him when he uses the overtake mode and DRS.
You’re free to use overtake, you have 25kph with DRS.
9Jenson ButtonTom StallardIs overtake working?
9Tom StallardJenson ButtonYes Jenson, overtake working. Pace is looking good, pace is good.
9Jenson ButtonTom StallardI tried to use it across the start/finish line but doesn’t seem to be doing anything.
10Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaKvyat has spun after contact with Perez
OK, he [censored] my race.
10Sergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseWhat is he doing?
10Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezDo you have any damage? Do you have any damage yourself?
10Sergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseI don’t think so.
11Mark TempleKevin MagnussenOK, Kevin. Some cars in front are starting to pit. If we can make good progress on this stint, then we can be in with a shout for some points.
11UnknownUnknownNot working you’ll have to use G3, G3.
13Tony RossNico RosbergAnd Nico just confirm -.4 for [soft] tyres next stint.
13Nico RosbergTony RossAffirm affirm.
13Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis looks like some of the [super-soft] runners are struggling with front-left graining. Stops will start happening soon.
13Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonStuck in a lot of traffic.
13Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYeah copy that Lewis. We just need to make sure we get to the end.
14Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezCheco to keep you updated at this stage we think it’s best overall for us to stick to plan at the moment. Is the graining clearing up at all on the front-left?
15Mark SladePastor MaldonadoAnd we will be racing Hulkenberg at the pit exit.
16Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasRespect the white line on the exit, you’re racing Hamilton and is coming into turn one now.
17Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonDo I have to save fuel?
17Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonNegative. Negative, Lewis. We are good on fuel.
17Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK and fail-5. Fail-5, fail. OK, that has affected upshifts. That’s something we need to do.
18Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo Bottas, two tenths faster, sector two. You’re forcast P2, even if Bottas overtakes.
18Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezDespite the performance boost Perez was unable to pass Vergne on the track.
Yellow chassis six, position two. That should be a step up in engine performance, Checo. You have four laps of it so let’s try and clear Vergne.
19Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsSmall drops of rain hit visor.
19Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasCopy that. Nothing big on the radar at the moment. Nothing big on the radar.
20Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton is under pressure from Bottas, who has fresh tyres
OK Lewis, it’s not critical, keeping the postion. We just need to make sure we get this stint length. So you will be target lap, or target lap minus two.
23Mark TempleKevin MagnussenAnd Kevin, you’ll have to switch to ‘golf three’, where you would’ve used the overtake, and then switch back to ‘golf six’.
23Kevin MagnussenMark TempleIt doesn’t work. It doesn’t switch on when you switch these.
23Mark TempleKevin MagnussenSo, it won’t make the overtake button work, but if you switch to ‘golf six’ on the start fin– ‘golf three’ on the start/finish line and then leave it there until turn six, that will give the extra power.
23Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezPerez has been warned to save fuel – he was hoping rain at the end of the race would mean he could save fuel later.
Checo we need to lift and coast please.
23Sergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseWhat about the rain at the end then?
23Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezWe can’t be certain about that at this stage. We cannot be certain. We cannot rely on the rain, so please lift-and-coast. That’s the last time I’m going to ask you, OK? I will not repeat it again.
24Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK, Button ahead is on the same age Primes. Button is doing 23.2s, you are catching him.
25Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe need to try to increase the gap to Alonso.
25Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinYeah, tell that to my rear-left tyre. Car’s really poor braking for turn two.
25Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood.
25Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis, if we go to menu magic, position one. Menu magic, position one. Menu magic, position one. There’s no rush, this is just for the pit stop.
25Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI’ve never heard of that switch. Which one…
25Peter BonningtonLewis Hamilton[Interrupting] OK, don’t worry about it mate. Don’t worry about it. Just leave it.
26Nico RosbergTony RossReally struggling with the rear.
26Tony RossNico RosbergWe’d like to come down to EB1, but no more forwards on brake balance. And try diff mid-5 as well.
26Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis, so box, box. Box, box. We’ll be going plus-one, same tyre
27Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilAdrian, is that your pace, or could you go quicker if you don’t have to defend?
27Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachI can’t go quicker!
27Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilOK, OK.
28Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuGrosjean has pulled off circuit
There is a problem with the power. Problem with the power. No power.
28Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanScenario-11. Scenario-11. Scenario-11.
28Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuStill no power. Still no power.
28Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK, stop the car. Stop the car. Stop the car please.
28Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuUnbelieveable. What’s happened again?
28Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanWe lost the car’s pump, I think. OK, car is safe Romain. Very sorry about that, you were doing well.
28Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceHulkenberg was able to keep going despite this problem with his engine.
Engine is not running smoothly any more.
28Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergStand by Nico, stand by, we’re looking for a driver default.
29Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceCar’s really slow. I have an alarm, the up-temp.
29Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergYeah that’s…
29Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceI can’t clear it.
29Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergChassis switch to position two.
29Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceI am in two! But I can’t do anything because I’ve got the alarm. It’s, like, blocked.
29Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergYeah, yeah move the chassis switch backwards and forwards. Back out of two, back to two.
29Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergDriver default-01. Driver default-01.
29Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceIt doesn’t take it. I’m not coming there because of the alarm.
29Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that, Nico.
31Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHamilton has caught Button.
Am I in a rush to get past him?
31Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonNegative, Lewis. Negative.
31Jenson ButtonTom StallardHamilton and Button collide at the hairpin, leaving Hamilton with front wing damage.
Hamilton just hit me at the rear.
31Tom StallardJenson ButtonUnderstood, Jenson. Understood.
31Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonDamaged my front wing. I thought he was letting me past. I thought he was letting me past. He went really wide, so…
31Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK, no worries Lewis. We’re looking at the data. Everything looks OK at the moment.
31Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI’ve lost quite a bit of downforce on my front wing.
32Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonIt looked like he was letting me past, right?
32Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAffirm, Lewis. Did to us.
32Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonIs there anything we can do? Can’t afford to change front wing, right?
32Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis, we’re going to look at the strategy. We’ll just see where your pace is. We’re going to calculate something and see what we can do for you.
33Mark TempleKevin MagnussenAnd Kevin, nice job getting past Kvyat. We need fuel-7, target zero on the dash. Fuel-7, target zero.
34Kimi RaikkonenDavid LloydThe left-front is very bad. Very bad. It doesn’t want to turn the car at all.
34David LloydKimi RaikkonenWe need another four laps on this set. Four laps.
34Nico RosbergTony RossStruggling with the rear and graining on the front now.
34Tony RossNico RosbergCopy copy.
34Kimi RaikkonenDavid LloydAgitated
We have to stop! We have to stop! The front-left is completely gone! We are losing [unclear]
35Jenson ButtonTom StallardYou need to give me info on what our plan is.
35Tom StallardJenson ButtonOK Jenson, you are P8. Hulkenberg in front is yet to pit, as is Ricciardo. And our plan is to run this tyre. We are still Plan-A.
36Mark TempleKevin MagnussenOK Kevin, car in front is Maldonado. You’re one second a lap faster than him.
37Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonLeft-front is already struggling.
37Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezCome on, Checo. We need to get past the Sauber. And then settle down into this stint. Traffic is costing us graining as well. Adding to our problems.
38Jean-Eric VergneXevi PujolarI’m losing so much time, I’m struggling like hell.
38Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneUnderstood. Stand by, we’ll let you know.
38Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK. Box now, Jev. Box.
39Max ChiltonGary GannonI’m trying everything here! The car’s giving me nothing, it’s so unbalanced.
39Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo Lewis, at the stop, we’re thinking we’ll try and add as much balance as we can with the wing that you have. It will lose us time if we change the wing.
40Nico RosbergTony RossReally struggling with the left-front now.
40Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK mate, good job. Let’s catch up with Button now. You’re minus four, Button.
41Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHamilton front-left mage meant his tyre was wearing more quickly, eventually leading the team to abandon his planned two-stop strategy.
How many laps have I done on this stint?
41Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonTwelve laps. Twelve laps on this tyre.
41Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonThis front-left is not going to last.
41Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis we’ll have to start looking at other options then.
41Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasBottas pits from second
You’ll be racing Alonso and Vettel. They’re just coming into Turn 1 now.
42Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelSebastian, we need a little bit more fuel. A little bit more fuel.
42Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinTell me what you want. Do you want me to pass or you want to save fuel, like a duck?
42Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe just need a little bit more fuel. Target plus 02. Respect the beeps in turn 13.
43Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis, so box, box. Box, box. Push as much as you can. We’re splitting this now.
43Mark SladePastor MaldonadoOK Pastor, now it’s really crucial that we make these tyres last. The cars around us…
43Pastor MaldonadoMark SladeCopy.
43Mark SladePastor MaldonadoWe think the cars around us are doing extra stops.
43Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton pits for Super Soft tyres
OK Lewis, so you’ll be on 13 lap stints, we think. Thirteen laps. So we need to manage them. We will need to manage them, but we should have good pace.
44Tony RossNico RosbergSo for information, Nico, Bottas is the next car. He is on Super Softs, so we think he is on a different strategy to you. So just important, look after that left front.
46David LloydKimi RaikkonenSo at the moment, if we go to the end, it’s going to be difficult or maybe possible. Fernando is going for a three-stop, definitely. Magnussen will have to stop again.
46Kimi RaikkonenDavid LloydOK, but would have been nice to know earlier.
47Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaKvyat has pulled off circuit with his engine in flames
Loss of power. Loss of power.
47Marco MatassaDaniil KvyatUnderstood
47Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaPark the car, Daniil. Park the car. No gearbox. No gearbox. Switch off the engine. Switch off, Daniil. Switch off. P1 immediately. There is fire. Jump off the left-hand side. Fire.
48Tony RossNico RosbergAnd we’re not expecting any rain before the end of the race.
49Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonIs my pace good enough?
49Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYes Lewis. Pace is good. Pace is good.
49Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceGive me a little information on the race. Who are we racing? What position are we racing for?
49Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergOK, so Ricciardo, you are racing, who is behind. He has just stopped. He’s on Soft tyres, seven laps newer than your Soft tyres. You are plus six seconds to Ricciardo. Plus six seconds.
49Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceWhat position are we racing him for?
49Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergWe’re in P7 at the moment, but Button ahead is likely to stop again.
50Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachSutil has spun at the final corner and the Sauber is stranded on the circuit
There’s something wrong on the car. Something’s wrong on the paddle.
50Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilOK. Understood. Pity.
52Gary GannonMax ChiltonStill yellow, turn 17. Sutil’s car is still there on the inside. Still yellow, turn 17.
53Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasGive me feedback on the tyre from your side.
53Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsFeels like we can make it to the end, but it’s not going to be easy. I’m not going to be able to push.
53Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasCopy that. So just keep managing the pace to get to the end. We need to manage the pace now to get to the end.
54Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo Bottas is zero on your pit window. Bottas zero on your pit window.
54Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK, so you’re pulling Bottas inside your pit window.
54Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo you’re still reeling in Bottas, he’s well inside your pit window now. Keep doing– we’ve got double yellow now. Double yellow. Caution, car on the track.
54Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo, caution. Marshalls on track. Yeah, affirm Lewis.
54Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonDo I need to be pushing and killing my tyres, or?
54Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis, so you’re still pulling the cars in. You’re still pulling the cars in your pit window. So what you’re doing is just good. So regardless, we are going to the end on this set So that’s going to need some management. We’ve got 15 laps to go.
55Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezOK, Kimi is in. Kimi and Magnussen in. Push, Checo. You’ll be racing Kimi. You’ll be racing Kimi.
56Mark TempleKevin MagnussenOK Kevin, we can push these tyres to the end of the race. Keep targetting zero on the target dash.
56Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo Bottas is seven seconds down the road. You are 1.8 seconds a lap faster.
57Tom StallardJenson ButtonOK Jenson, so we’re racing Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg, four seconds behind.
58Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonBottas, five seconds ahead. You are one and a half seconds a lap faster. So Lewis, this should be an easy catch. We just need to get the tyre to the end.
59Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasFor info, next car behind is Hamilton. He’s about 1.2 seconds a lap faster. Let’s not race him hard, we need to get this tyre to the end. Let’s not race him and kill this tyre. Just look after this tyre and get to the end.
59Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergWe believe Button may be staying out. His tyres are eight laps older than yours. Eight laps older than yours.
60Tony RossNico RosbergJust be aware, Magnussen is a lapped car, but he is slightly faster than you at the moment on super soft tyres. He’s two seconds behind.
61Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelSebastian, we need target 0.02 until the end. Fuel target 0.02 until the end, required.
61Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinAm I doing 0.04? Please confirm.
61Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelThat is correct. Which is too much. This is too much, we need a smaller number.
61Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelOK, Sebastian, now we need more. We need zero on the dash. We need zero on dash.
61Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasSo you can use the ‘overtake’ to try defending. Use ‘overtake’ to try defending if he attacks. But just bear in mind we’ve got to get this tyre to the end.
62Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK so we’re going to charge up the battery where we can’t get overtaken and then you can use overtake to defend.
63Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasSo you can push a little bit harder. Tyres are looking OK. Little risk from behind, so let’s try and protect against Hamilton.
64David LloydKimi RaikkonenThere could be some drops of rain in a minute or so. It should be very light.
65Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergSo we’re plus 16 seconds to Button behind. Plus 16, so we should be comfy.
65Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHe’s too fast on the straight.
65Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYeah, affirm Lewis. Don’t forget he had DRS on that straight.
66Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelFuel now minus zero two. We need more and more fuel saving, Sebastian.
66Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinYeah, I’m burning all I have.
66Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe need to save fuel! We need to save fuel!
67Jenson ButtonTom StallardI think we… well, we got the strategy a little bit wrong.
VLTony RossNico RosbergGreat drive, Nico. Great drive! Well done!
VLNico RosbergTony RossWoohoo! Yes! Thank you! Thanks a lot, guys.
VLTony RossNico RosbergReally well done, well controlled. Most cars were on three-stop – you managed it with a two-stop… Incorrect information, Bottas also on a two-stop.
VLPaddy LoweNico RosbergAbsolutely brilliant drive, Nico. Well done. Well done.
VLNico RosbergPaddy LoweThank you, Paddy.
VLJonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasAmazing! That was fantastic! Beat a Mercedes fair and square! Unreal. Great drive, Valtteri. P2.
VLValtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsPhew! Thank you. They still were a little bit too quick, but glad to keep one of them behind. Thank you guys, again really really solid job.
VLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis, great drive. Great drive. Excellent recovery from P20. Could’ve been a little bit better, could’ve been a whole lot worse.
VLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelGood job, Sebastian. Good job.
VLSebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinOK, sorry for the misunderstanding there at the end.
VLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelThat’s alright.
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelWell done, Sebby. I think we got everything there was out of that. Well done. Some great moves there – the one on the inside of Alonso, that was big kahunas.
VLSebastian VettelChristian HornerThank you guys. It was a tough afternoon. Obviously we didn’t have the pace that we expected. So still plenty of work ahead.
VLSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoGood effort, mate. Very good recovery from where we were. Unforunately the race wasn’t one lap longer, but obviously we said the opposite last week. Good effort mate. Good drive.
VLDaniel RicciardoSimon RennieThanks guys. That was a fun battle.
VLBrad JoyceNico HulkenbergOK, well done. Plenty of pickup on the tyres on the way in. P7, Nico. P7. Mode 12. Mode 12.
VLNico HulkenbergBrad JoyceGood, thank you. Hard work that was. I don’t like to say it, but the car was an absolute dog today. The balance was nowhere. It was really bad.
VLBrad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that Nico. I’m sure a lot of other cars were struggling out there as well. Our pace looked good, especially for the strategy we did. And we finished 30 seconds ahead of Sergio.
VLTom StallardJenson ButtonOK, Jenson. Well done mate. That was pretty tough. Fuel’s OK so normal inlap, please. Normal inlap. Switches are good.
VLJenson ButtonTom StallardThanks for your hard work, guys. Sorry it didn’t really come to much, but… yeah. Good job.
VLTom StallardJenson ButtonCheers Jenson. Well done. And sorry it was tough, but we’ll do better next time.
VLMark TempleKevin MagnussenObviously that was a bit of a disappointing result. P9. We were on for a very strong position at the start. Didn’t see what happened at the beginning, but I think you drove a good recovery to P9.
VLKevin MagnussenMark TempleThe thing with the first corner, not much I could do, I think. Anyway, good job this weekend.
VLGianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezAnd P10, in the end. P10.
VLSergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseNot our race then.

  1. I think that it was Antonio Spagnolo this time in Kimi’s pit radio, not David Lloyd.

  2. Lap 58 – Peter Bonnington ==> Lewis Hamilton: Bottas, five seconds ahead. You are one and a half seconds a lap faster. So Lewis, this should be an easy catch. We just need to get the tyre to the end.

    No it wasn’t Bonno :-p

    1. It was an easy catch, just not an easy pass.

    2. It was an easy catch. OVertake is a different matter tho. He probably killed the front left too while catching him, owed to the front wing damage.

  3. The call for “Menu magic, position one” was funny, and Lewis sounded utterly befuddled.

  4. 25 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton OK Lewis, if we go to menu magic, position one. Menu magic, position one. Menu magic, position one. There’s no rush, this is just for the pit stop.
25 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington I’ve never heard of that switch. Which one…

    This one is funny :)

    1. I’ve heard Rosberg being asked to use the magic button in previous races, so obviously its on one car and either it has a different meaning on the other car or it doesnt exist and is just a code that means nothing

  5. Guillaume Rocquelin >> Sebastian Vettel “We need to try to increase the gap to Alonso.”

Sebastian Vettel >> Guillaume Rocquelin “Yeah, tell that to my rear-left tyre.”

This was the most fuel-saving dominated race I can recall this season. I don’t think it adds anything to the proceedings.

  6. I think it’s interesting no radio on Alonso about his last lap on 8th gear.

    1. Interestingly, the Ferrari team radio (particularly Alonso’s communiques) is conspicuous by its absence in most transcripts.

    2. Given the several seasons long “Mystery of Fernando’s Missing Messages”, it would be more interesting and surprising if there WERE any such radio transcripts!

there is tiny typo in article above.

A similar situation unfolded at Sauber, where Sergio Perez was reminded in no uncertain terms about the importance of saving fuel. It was a difficult race for the Force India driver

Should say “A similar situation unfolded at Force India…”

  8. Tell me what you want. Do you want me to pass or you want to save fuel, like a duck?”

Ducks are well-known for being economical with their fuel…

    1. @bpacman espetially easy on their tiers

    2. Presumably another one of those Germanisms which translates poorly into English.

  9. “And we finished 30 seconds ahead of Sergio.”

I find stuff like this very interesting, a little pat on the back for the Hulk! I also like that Horner calls Vettel “Sebby”…

  10. Love these transcripts, thanks a lot.

  11. The Unknown to Unknown about G-3 *may* be someone at McLaren – notice how Temple tells Magnussen to switch to “Golf-3” later.

  12. I feel that another way to interpret “That’s the last time I’m going to ask you, OK? I will not repeat it again” from GL to Checo is that GL is apologetic about this and is telling Checo that he will not ask him to lift-and-coast again. So this is the last time he will have to conserve fuel but afterwards he can go racing again. Maybe SP was irritable about having to conserve fuel at that stage – obviously the plan was to wait for the rain.

  13. That conversation between Hulk and Brad Joyce on lap 29 is fun to read.
F1 can never a run a campaign for “do not text while driving”, can it?

    1. rofl great call.

  14. OK, Checo. That’s 30 seconds. Commence the bite-point finds now. Two bite-point finds.

    What are bite points?

    1. Bite point is point where has chlutch best grip. So they’re finding it for the best possible start at the begin of the warm-up lap.

  15. “18 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Bottas, two tenths faster, sector two. You’re forcast P2, even if Bottas overtakes.”

Here is a clue on something totally wrong with f1 today, drop the radios and strategy computers then put all in-race strategy decision on driver alone instead of deciding the result at lap 18.

Yeah to much tech and not enough mechanics. Engineers are controlling the drivers. I wonder what would happen if you put back the clutch pedal in the foot well ?

The small article at the top says:

A similar situation unfolded at Sauber, where Sergio Perez was reminded in no uncertain terms about the importance of saving fuel. It was a difficult race for the Force India driver, who at one stage was given a power boost to aid his attempt to pass Jean-Eric Vergne but wasn’t able to overtake the Toro Rosso.

Shouldn’t it be Force India there ??
    …..
other than that, the radio transcripts are a great fun to read. Loved the ‘magic menu’ bit.
