F1 Teams

Although well over 100 teams have competed in Formula 1 since the world championship began in 1950, in recent years only 10 have participated in each season.

However the maximum number of cars and teams permitted to enter F1 has varied over the years. It peaked in 1989, when up to 39 cars were entered for some races. But even then only 26 were allowed to start, meaning up to a third of the drivers who entered did not make the cut.

Only one team – Ferrari – has competed in F1 since the first world championship season, but not a single competitors has entered every round of every season.

Several other long-running teams remain in F1 today, such as McLaren and Williams. Other famous names have come and gone, like Alfa Romeo and Renault.

Other great names of the past became unable to keep pace with the rapid rate of development in F1 and collapsed or were taken over by rivals and rebranded. Past world champions like Lotus, Brabham and others faded and folded. The most recent team to collapse was Manor at the end of the 2016 season.

Today’s teams are a mixture of manufacturers who build complete cars and constructors who obtain power units and often other parts including gearboxes, and make the rest for themselves.

Among the current 10 teams, several have changed names many times. The team which current races as Aston Martin originally came into F1 in 1991 under the name Jordan, and has been through several changes of name.
