The team radio airwaves were thick with recrimination during an incident-packed Hungarian Grand Prix – and one driver was involved in much of it.

Daniel Ricciardo tangled with three of his rivals during the course of the race. First came his lap one contact with Valtteri Bottas, then Lewis Hamilton bounced off him after the restart, and finally there was the controversial tangle with Nico Rosberg.

Team mate Daniil Kvyat had an axe to grind as well after being ordered to let Ricciardo past early in the race – an instruction he clearly didn’t like one bit. Ricciardo’s collision with Rosberg ensured it was Kvyat who crossed the finishing line first, but despite taking his best result of the season Kvyat’s race engineer left him in no doubt this hadn’t been one of his best performances.

Kimi Raikkonen occupied second place for much of the race until his MGU-K failed. Ferrari quickly determined that the only possible solution open to them was the same fix we all resort to when something electrical fails – turning it off and on again.

Faced with the choice of leaving an ailing car on the track where it would inevitably lose more places or bringing it in to the pits for a ‘power cycle’, Ferrari eventually plumped for the latter. Had the Safety Car not come out and destroyed Raikkonen’s lead over his pursuers Ferrari surely would have left him out longer, and when rebooting the car failed he questioned whether the right call had been made.

When Ferrari eventually called Raikkonen in to retire the call came too late and he had to drive another lap before pitting. It capped a miserable weekend in which he’d also suffered a front wing failure on Friday and a water leak on Saturday.

Perhaps the most telling exchange of race occurred between Nico Rosberg and his race engineer Tony Ross. Rosberg’s initial preference to take the conservative medium tyre over the aggressive soft preferred by the pit wall for his final stint was a clear indication he was more concerned with taking points off Lewis Hamilton than trying to take on the Ferraris to win the race. Ironically, the timing of the Virtual Safety Car period meant he ended up on the mediums in the end.

4Valtteri BottasJonathan EddollsCopy. From my side all OK.
4Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonNice moved back onto… You know you’re supposed to only be able to move once.
5Tom StallardJenson ButtonNice work on the opening lap you are now P14.
6Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoAre you being held up? What is your status?
6Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieYeah held up a lot.
6Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatDo not hold Ricciardo behind.
6Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseWell I’m also stuck behind them.
6Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatYeah, understood. Do not hold Ricciardo though, Danny, please. Do not hold Ricciardo. Copy?
6Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseWell I do not. I’m stuck behind Hulkenberg, I am trying to pass.
7Roberto MerhiNicholas PerrinnMy head rest is blowing away.
7Nicholas PerrinnRoberto MerhiOK mate box box we’ll change the head rest.
9Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatDanny, Ricciardo is on a different strategy. Let’s fall back into our own race now, please.
9Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseWell my tyres are not great shape. So maybe we might consider switching our strategy as well.
9Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatOK. Let Ricciardo through please Danny.
9Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseWell I am in the DRS of Hulkenberg [censored by FOM] guys.
9Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatDanny please let Ricciardo through.
9Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK mate so we’ve got to make the most of it now, let’s get stuck in.
10Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonFront brakes are on the limit. We need B-bal 56 or do some management.
10Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonLet me know when I can get back on my brakes, man.
10Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo you can start to push again. Go bite point three. HPB switch change coming up.
11Tony RossNico RosbergUnless we can close the gap to Raikkonen we’ll extend the…
11Nico RosbergTony RossInterrupting
Don’t tell me again. Don’t tell me again. I’m trying.
12Marco MatassaCarlos Sainz JnrScenario four, Carlos. Can you overtake Massa?
12Carlos Sainz JnrMarco MatassaYes but I’m destroying.
12Marco MatassaCarlos Sainz JnrOK Carlos so let’s go for it. Scenario 5 available.
13Max VerstappenXevi PujolarI am really getting held up now.
13Xevi PujolarMax VerstappenCopy that. Just watch Alonso coming behind.
13Xevi PujolarMax VerstappenCarlos will get one more chance, then we change.
13Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseThese tyres are vibrating a lot.
14Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatBox and pit confirm.
14Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergWe are struggling to get a pit window Nico. There’s a lot of traffic in the pit window so we will be looking to go longer on these tyres. Hamilton’s now got past Perez, and Bottas and Kvyat have pitted now.
15Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonYou are very quiet Bono.
15Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCopy that, Lewis. Everything’s happening now. Just push as hard as you can.
15Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHow far am I behind everyone?
15Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo three seconds to Hulkenberg next car.
16Xevi PujolarMax VerstappenNeed to push hard now, Max.
16Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHow’s my pace?
16Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonPace is good. Pace is very good.
17Felipe MassaDave RobsonI don’t know why but the balance is really, really bad on the car. So it’s just the grip very low.
17Riccardo AdamiSebastian VettelTyres are in good shape. [Soft] looks good.
19Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodOne of the onboard cameras broke off the nose of Raikkonen’s car.
I lost some part on the front, maybe on the front wing. It just came off.
19David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenSo far everything looks OK on the front wing. It must have been a very small part.
19Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodNo it was a big part, exit of the chicane.
20Tony RossNico RosbergBox, box, box.
21Tim WrightSergio PerezKeep pushing we are looking at the data. Let us know if you have any damage.
21Sergio PerezTim WrightYes, at the rear. The rear suspension. What is he doing, I gave him enough space.
21Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonThis is great stuff Lewis, you’ve been putting some excellent lap times, let’s just keep it up.
22Mark TempleFernando AlonsoFor info almost all cars did an early first stop so the race is going to be all about the second stop.
23Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonNice work Lewis.
23Josh PeckettWill StevensDo you have any comments on if we can extent the stint. We’re looking at it for traffic reasons.
23Will StevensJosh PeckettYes we can extend, not too much, but we can go further, yeah.
24Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoYour pace in clean air has been really good. The cars in front are all struggling with tyres.
24Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoRemember mate if you keep him behind early he might struggle afterwards. His tyres might struggle.
25Dave RobsonFelipe MassaRemember this is the [medium] tyre. We’re looking for a long stint on this. Let’s look after it like we did on Friday, manage the tyres like we did on Friday in P2.
25Felipe MassaDave RobsonYes I understand, but it was a different car on Friday.
26Mark SladePastor MaldonadoI’m afraid we have a drive-through for causing a collision. Stopping at the end of this lap. Driving through the pit lane at the end of this lap.
26Pastor MaldonadoMark SladeCome on this is crazy. I’ve been hit by Perez.
27Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoDoing a very good job mate. Let’s keep it good, keep it clean.
27Will StevensJosh PeckettJosh speak louder I’m struggling to hear you.
27Josh PeckettWill StevensUnderstood, mate. Let’s try and extend this stint. We are looking at it for traffic reasons.
28Xevi PujolarMax VerstappenMax we have to get close to Kvyat and attack otherwise Alonso will get us.
29Mark TempleFernando AlonsoKvyat in front of Verstappen is having problems he is six-tenths slower than us so we may be able to close up on him.
29Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHamilton asks for an extra lap of high engine performance in order to pass Ricciardo, which succeeds.
I am so close. Can I have one more lap, Bono?
29Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAffirm.
29Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseIt’s quite undriveable I must say. I have no rear support.
30Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatCopy Danny.
30Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonGap to Nico 15.7 seconds. He is on the [medium] tyre. Last lap 28.5. Let’s see what you can do.
30Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonBrakes OK?
30Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonBrakes are good now you’re in free air. Strat mode four.
31Tim WrightSergio PerezUse everything from this tyre.
31Sergio PerezTim WrightThe rears are gone.
31Tim WrightSergio PerezBox this lap, box box.
32Fernando AlonsoMark TempleRear tyres dropping quite quickly now.
32Mark TempleFernando AlonsoOK understood.
32Tim WrightSergio PerezMassa behind, used soft, trying to get to the end.
33Xevi PujolarMax VerstappenLeft-rear tyre temperature is high now and brakes too hot.
33Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergNico we’ll be extending the stint as we have a good window on the car behind. There’s no reason to go early.
34Carlos Sainz JnrMarco MatassaI’m starting to recover a bit the rear.
34Marco MatassaCarlos Sainz JnrYes Carlos confirm. Clean laps.
35Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonLewis we’re going to stretch it as long as we can, minimise the time on the [medium].
36Mark SladePastor MaldonadoIf you’re close enough for DRS use strat three, charge is high.
36Tony RossNico RosbergSo Nico we need to find more lap time. Lewis will be going to the [medium] tyre, possibly earlier than you.
36Nico RosbergTony RossI’ll go to the [medium] as well, then.
36Tony RossNico RosbergNico at the moment the pit wall are not inclined to do that.
37Mark TempleFernando AlonsoWe have to push 101%, I will explain later. Let’s go to G4.
37Tony RossNico RosbergSo Nico you can do this on [soft] but we need to find more pace on the [medium] at the moment. So Nico Lewis currently 7.5 seconds behind you on the [soft] tyre, a second a lap quicker. Most of that is from the tyre but we do have to find more pace.
38Mark TempleFernando AlonsoFernando box now, rear-right puncture.
38Fernando AlonsoMark TempleOK pit lane.
38Mark TempleFernando AlonsoAnd launch map on, we’re fitting [medium].
38Xevi PujolarMax VerstappenOK Max box this lap.
40Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonGenerally have understeer. So I’ll go up another half a hole.
40Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCopy that Lewis, I’ll leave you to it.
40Riccardo AdamiSebastian VettelVery good lap Sebastian. Keep your head down.
40Tony RossNico RosbergNice lap time Nico. Just keep pushing like that.
41Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodI think I have some odd sound in the car and I’m losing power.
41David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenUnderstood we’ll look at it now.
42Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodWhat is this issue?
42David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenWe have an issue in the MGU-K at the minute.
42Mark TempleFernando AlonsoRaikkonen in front may have an issue. He is a lap ahead but we can overtake him if you are faster.
43Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodNow I have to fight this one guy.
43David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenSorry Kimi, sorry.
43Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodIt doesn’t get any better.
43David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenOk we’re still looking. OK Kimi we’re still on it, we know you have no MGU-K, we’re on it. OK Kimi driver default ten on.
43Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodOK the problem got more worse now when you went that.
43David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenUnderstood Kimi, put ten off, Kimi. Driver default ten off.
45Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergAre you OK mate?
45Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceYeah something broke at the front.
45Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergAre you OK?
45Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceYeah I’m good.
45Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergOK mate. Unlucky.
45Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieDoes this help us in any way?
45Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoIt’s not bad mate.
45David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenSo Kimi the situation with MGU K is we don’t have it. The car will still run, everything will be fine, we’ve just lost obviously quite a lot of performance.
46Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCurrently P4, Nico P3, Raikkonen P2, we believe he has an ERS issue. Vettel P1.
46Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatYou’ll need to drive through the pit lane this time around. Safety Car and the train of cars are driving through the pit lane to avoid the debris. Please confirm.
46Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseOK, understood.
47Tony RossNico RosbergThere is a chance that we can win this, we think there is a chance we can win this. Kimi has a power unit problem, we should be able to pass him pretty quickly. We also know that Ferrari have a warm-up problem and a pace problem on the [medium] tyre.
48Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonInformation: Ricciardo car behind he is on [soft] tyres, just need to be wary on the restart. Kimi has an ERS problem so he should be an easy pass. Otherwise we are racing for the win, mate.
48Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHow’s Sebastian’s pace been today?
48Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis at your best you had nine-tenths on him.
48Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatBottas could struggle on his [medium] tyres.
51Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoRicciardo passed Hamilton but was hit by the Mercedes.
Nice job, remember Raikkonen may have a problem with his power.
51Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieI think I’ve got some damage though. I’ll keep going but Hamilton hit me pretty hard.
51Max VerstappenXevi PujolarCheck my damage.
51Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodThere’s nothing that I can do on the straight.
51David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenUnderstood Kimi, understoof, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.
51Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI just had no front end, just understeered into him.
52Tony RossNico RosbergSo 19 laps remaining. Just thinking about how we’re going to get past Vettel.
55Sergio PerezTim WrightI have a very long pedal. Extremely long.
55Tim WrightSergio PerezUnderstood Checo. Do you think it’s related to temperature?
55Sergio PerezTim WrightIt’s just everywhere. Every single corner.
55Tim WrightSergio PerezCheco we’re going to retire the car.
55Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe have a drive-through for causing a collision so we’ll take it this lap.
55Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonOK.
56David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenWe’re going to power cycle the car in the pit lane and change to [soft]. Box this lap, Kimi, box this lap. So the guys will change the tyres. If you go to P0. You will be restarting the car on the MGU-K. So when you’ve stopped go P0, then you go back into P1, then K1 button, P2 to restart the car. So six seconds for the power cycle. So stay in P0 for six seconds, Kimi.
56Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodNothing happens when I am in P1.
56UnknownKimi RaikkonenOK we’re going to fire with a starter, Kimi. Just give us a second. Go P2 when the starter’s running. OK we go now.
56Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodNo the problem is still there.
56David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenUnderstood Kimi, understood. Sorry about that, we tried our best.
56Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodI’m sorry to stay but we should have stayed out if we were not 100% sure that this going to fix the problem, we were still in a much better position, but now.
56David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenBox this lap Kimi we’re retiring, box this lap if you can.
56Kimi RaikkonenDavid GreenwoodToo late.
56David GreenwoodKimi RaikkonenUnderstood, sorry Kimi.
57Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonJust need to limit our losses today mate. See what we can do.
57Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonAm I last?
57Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCurrently P15.
57Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI’m so sorry guys. Really sorry.
57Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonDon’t sweat about it Lewis. 20 seconds away from some points. Let’s go get them.
58Mark SladePastor MaldonadoWe have another drive-through for speeding in the pit lane entry. Please do it this lap.
59Tom StallardJenson ButtonNice work JB. Back in P8.
59Marco MatassaCarlos Sainz JnrCurrently we are in P9. Come on, let’s keep these points.
59Carlos Sainz JnrMarco MatassaIt’s impossible. I cannot pass fourth gear.
60Marco MatassaCarlos Sainz JnrYes we know Carlos but we anyway think you are doing a good job. Keep strong, keep going mate.
60Erik SchuivensMarcus EricssonKeep focused now Marcus, keep pushing. 12 laps.
61Marco MatassaCarlos Sainz JnrOK Carlos. We retire the car, box this lap. Sorry for that you were doing an amazing job, an amazing race. It is a pity. Well done anyway.
61Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatOK Danny push up to Ricciardo, there are blue flag opportunities coming up ahead.
62Riccardo AdamiSebastian VettelEight laps to go. Keep your head down.
63Mark TempleFernando AlonsoG6 is the fastest way to the end of the race from here. Gives us the beat chance of staying ahead of Hamilton.
63Fernando AlonsoMark TempleBut when he arrives I need the overtake button. And which tyres is Hamilton?
63Mark TempleFernando AlonsoHamilton is on used [soft], his pace is very strong but he’s got some cars to overtake before he gets to us.
64Dave RobsonFelipe MassaWe’re racing both these Saubers for a point, Felipe. Let’s get this point.
64Nico RosbergTony RossPuncture, puncture.
64Tony RossNico RosbergCopy, just bring it in.
64Daniil KvyatGianpiero LambiaseDaniel is very slow.
64Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatOK don’t worry Ricciardo is in this lap, Danny.
65Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieI got chopped on the exit. Front wing’s damaged.
65Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoYeah understood mate. If you can stay out. How’s the balance.
65Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieI’ll try. It’s pretty bad, though.
66Mark TempleFernando AlonsoGap to Hamilton eight seconds, he is behind Grosjean.
66Fernando AlonsoMark TempleWhere is Rosberg?
66Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg is a long way back, he is not a concern.
67Tom StallardJenson ButtonRosberg is the car behind. You are racing Rosberg but we don’t want to lose ground on Ericsson.
67Gianpiero LambiaseDaniil KvyatWe’ve been given a ten second penalty. At this stage it means nothing. You have a 20-second gap to Ricciardo behind.
68Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis let’s get on it, not long now.
68Will StevensJosh PeckettDefinitely have a problem with the rear right.
68Josh PeckettWill StevensOK we will be in now please. Pit confirm.
68Mark TempleFernando AlonsoOne lap to go after this. Gap to Hamilton 6.6.

  1. It’s odd that we had no radio with Vettel in the laps after SC when Rosberg was breathing down his neck. Or perhaps in those situation Seb prefers no communication to focus better. He was lucky though that it was Rosberg’s Merc (whose pace was worse than Hamilton) on Medium tyres.

    1. @ifelix If you want to talk luck everyone can be happy there was a SC as it almost improved everyones chances at a better result except for Vettel.

      1. That’s pretty much always the case when it comes to safety cars. The leaders suffers the most.

      2. Didn’t mean to diss neither Rosberg nor Vettel there.
I meant luck in the context of “Gluck im Ungluck” (German expression roughly translated as fortune amid misfortune) say: the safety car was tough luck but still it could have been worse.

    2. According to the team, there was indeed not much talk between Vettel and his engineer.
      Link: formula1.ferrari.com/en/racing-stories-hungarian-gp-2015/

Seb was serene in the midst of the madness.
There was almost total radio silence, apart from Riccardo Adami calling out the lap times when it was time to push in the early stages and leaving it up to the driver to deal with Rosberg’s comeback when the Safety Car was running the show. “Good lap, keep on pushing.”

      1. “He was meditating, we didn’t wanna disturb him.”

      2. I don’t buy it… all drivers that go to SF change behavior and don’t use radio for almost the entire race(s).

        1. I don’t know what not to buy. They were talking about this specific occasion. OTOH, there were lots when rain started in Silverstone and they admitted so.

          1. Fair enough @shena .. I didn’t pay much attention to the Silverstone team radio transcripts. ;)
I got that idea also from the time Alonso had very few to say to his race engineer.

      3. I am not surprised at the less chatter. Remember during the Malaysian Grand Prix, there was very little radio from him and whatever little we heard from him, he was calmly singing “blue flag, blue flag” on the radio.

I wonder whether he speaks to them in a language other than English most of the time, so they don’t bother to broadcast it? I remember Alonso used to do that.

(obviously the entire audience isn’t made up of English speakers, but the sport does seem focused on that language).

      1. I don’t think he is that skilled in Italian at the moment. So unless Adami can speak or understand German it’s probably not the case.

  2. What were B-bal 56 and HPB switch Mercedes talking about?
Feels like a lot of cryptic massage there that I thought Lewis was asking for more ‘code’ when he said Bono was too quiet. :)

    1. @ruliemaulana
B-bal is obviously brake balance (56% front), not sure about HPB.

    2. B-bal 56 is 56-44 front-rear balance. HPB is probably and engine mode switch. Nothing cryptic here.

    3. B-bal 56, bite point three, HPB switch, Strat mode four…
It’s hard to fly the rocket ship.

      1. Rocket ship?
Then why F1 wan’t to eliminate radio between astronaut and Houston?
Are we gonna witness more fail launch after Spa?

        1. Yes, we will.

Merci Jules, cette victoire est pour toi. You will always be in our hearts.

Absolutely love that one! That’s what sealed the deal for Vettel to win my DOTW vote.

    1. +1 Absolument.

By the way, from post victory radio transmissions to post race press conference I heard Vettel talk in: English, Italian, French, and German. I thought that was interesting.

  4. If Ricciardo is a great racer why cant he overtake his teammates without team orders? and when he try to pass drivers from other teams he must hit them (Raikkonen in Monaco and Rosberg in Hungary)
By the way I am ready for the attack :)

    1. @malik Isn’t it more likely to be the case that in any interaction between its drivers the Red Bull pit wall gets involved? After all we saw it plenty of times with Vettel and Webber.

      1. Indeed that might just be the case @keithcollantine. Once bitten, twice shy etc.

      2. Did we? I’ve seen more team orders from RB in the last year and a half than in the entire five years Webber and Vettel drove together. And always in favor of Ricciardo as well.

        1. Yeah, there were the infamous ‘maintain the position’ orders (’11 Silverstone, ’13 Malaysia, a forgotten one ’09 Turkey, ..) but not for swapping positions, like those from the recent two seasons, just because one of them has better pace or on a different strategy. Two occasions off the top of my head: 2011 Brazil when Vettel had a gearbox issue and in the same place the next year where he was fighting for the championship.

          1. Edit: Actually there was no order from the pitwall in 2011 Brazil. Vettel initiated it. http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2011/11/28/2011-brazilian-grand-prix-red-bull/

          2. It’s incredible that Vettel ASKED the team to let Webber through.

          1. Except that in that case there was an understanding, and Kvyat was first told to let Ricciardo through.

          2. @keithcollantine but only after kvyat has been asked to let ricciardo through first.

          3. @rigi Indeed, but the comment I was replying to claimed that the calls are “always in favour of Ricciardo”. This case demonstrates that is not true because if it was Red Bull wouldn’t have switched the positions back as they were, they would have just left Ricciardo ahead.

          4. Daniel got into that attacking position only thanks to Kyvat being a team player. The last team order in Monaco was a direct result of the previous team order a few laps earlier.
Do not take one team order in isolation and claim that “team orders are not always in favor of Ricciardo”, Keith.

          5. Do not take one team order in isolation and claim that “team orders are not always in favor of Ricciardo”

But one order in isolation is all that’s required to contradict that idea…

    2. I am pleased Kvyat doesn’t just move over for Ricciardo. I hope he keeps it up.

    3. You must want to be attacked with a comment like that. Ricciardo was the man to watch on Sunday. The ballsiest racer on the grid IMO…

      1. In the end though, his car was as fast as Ferrari if not faster, he should have been closer to the lead. I would have expected him to qualify 3rd in the first place. He was slower than Vettel in 2nd sector. Isn’t that where we expected them to be faster? He missed it in Monaco and Silverstone qualis too. And he’s just horrible at the starts. Reminds me of Webber. Lately, he also had some horrible pace. Not to mention he gets into too much “incidents”. Monaco with Raikkonen, Silverstone at the start, Bottas-Hamilton-Rosberg in Hungary… Now he sounds totally like Webber.
I believe he can do better.

55 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington OK. Let Ricciardo through please Danny.

Amazing that Hamilton determines RBR’s strategy ;) (@keithcollantine)

    1. @coldfly Changed it, thanks.

      1. Also:

66 Fernando Alonso Mark Temple Where is Rosberg?
66 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Rosberg is a long way back, he is not a concern.

  6. Will Stevens:”Tell Roberto to stop going so slowly, you can’t cool the car like that.”
    LOL!

  7. I wonder if the next race some drivers will be slower off the line because there was an aborted start last time around?

    1. Sorry but, I don’t follow your logic here. Why would some drivers be slower next time out?

      1. Extra precaution. Just in case there is another aborted lap? Though, since no one jump started in Hungary, they must have been careful of that or given info on the radio.

  8. Cannot even retire Raikkonen properly, that Scuderia Ferrari. Poor guy. Miserable.

  9. So Nico you can do this on [soft] but we need to find more pace on the [medium] at the moment. So Nico Lewis currently 7.5 seconds behind you on the [soft] tyre, a second a lap quicker. Most of that is from the tyre but we do have to find more pace.

    Lier lier.

    1. or maybe liar liar? Also pretty fair to say it was obvious over the entire weekend that the soft tyre had at least 1 second per lap advantage or more so I really don’t understand where you are going with that one.

  10. That was a remarkably graceless response from Red Bull to Kvyat, given that he’d just won his first podium – and also become the second youngest podium finisher of all time. It’s a bit astonishing his own team told him he didn’t really deserve it. Regardless of whether its true or not, its not the sort of thing I’d expect any team to say to their own driver.

    1. Absolutely agree with you. It’s appalling. It’s like even his own engineer is favoring Ricciardo or something.

    2. I don’t think so, it’s true that he inherited his position and he wasn’t on Ricciardo’s pace all weekend. Apart from the result it was a disappointing race for Kvyat.

      1. it’s true that he inherited his position

That’s true of every driver in the top five apart from Vettel. It’s true to some extent of many drivers at many GP’s. But you don’t see e.g. Verstappens engineer mention the fact that, if Kimi’s engine did not fail and NR and DR collide, Max would have been nowhere near fourth place.

      2. So? That may well be the case, but surely saying something like that is counterproductive? They should be praising him, not undermining his confidence. Drivers need to know that the team has faith in their abilities – look at Bonnington’s response to Lewis for an example: he didn’t say “You should be sorry, you messed up the first lap and crashed into another driver”, but he reassured Lewis, telling him not to worry about it.

Even Maldonado’s engineer resisted the temptation to laugh at him when he got his 900th penalty of the day.

      3. If Ricciardo had won the race after the safety car, would they have said “well, you didn’t deserve it, but whatever”? That’s what it sounded like.
And Ricciardo should have won without the safety car, mind you. He had the car to do it, but as usual, he had a horrendous start too.

  11. Kimi and David do not make a good driver/engineer team. He seems to be apologizing always and is mostly reactive.

Also what’s the deal on Bonnington giving info about brakes to Lewis? Isn’t that banned?

I believe the most patient guy on the grid will be Mark Slade. Very eager to know what goes on in his mind when Maldonado puts the blame on Perez after that shunt :)

    1. Mark Slade after Maldonado gets yet another penalty: “I miss Kimi”.
Kimi Raikkonen after Greenwood apologizes to him for yet another botched job: “I miss Slade”.

      1. I think a better engineer will help Kimi a lot. David Greenwood seems scared of Kimi and their communication generally involves Kimi cursing about the situation and David apologizing for it.

And one thing seems clear, Kimi ain’t fond of Alonso

Now I have to fight this one guy.

        1. LOL. He makes funny comments on “that McLaren” of Alonso. Which GP was that he sounded like he was laughing at him on the radio?

          1. Chinese GP :-)

    2. @evered7
I assume they’re allowed to inform the driver if the brakes are overheating as it’s a safety issue.

      1. @george I got this from JAonF1. Doesn’t the second point cover what Bono said to Lewis?

        Braking points.
        – Rate of braking compared to another driver.
        – Rate of braking or application of brakes in general.
        – Car stability under braking.

Front brakes are on the limit. We need B-bal 56 or do some management. Let me know when I can get back on my brakes, man.

        1. @evered7
I think it’s different because he’s not talking about a way to improve laptimes, but to protect the brakes. For example if he said ‘brake less into t4 and carry more apex speed’, or ‘move balance back for better turn-in’ that would be driver tuition.

What he’s saying though is that the brakes are getting too hot so they need to use them less. Personally I’d prefer that they weren’t allowed to do this either so they would need to either be more circumspect with brake cooling or rely on driver feel (if that’s even possible), but as it’s a safety issue I guess they’re allowed.

          1. What he’s saying though is that the brakes are getting too hot so they need to use them less.

If that were all he was saying I wouldn’t have a problem with it. But that’s emphatically not the message being sent.

          2. @george I would like for them to just let the drivers know that the brakes are hot. How they manage to keep it consistent, should be up to them.

Telling them what exactly to do is what the problem is here. But then the rule itself was difficult to implement to even be disappointed at the way it has been enforced.

  12. 36 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg So Nico we need to find more lap time. Lewis will be going to the [medium] tyre, possibly earlier than you.
36 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross I’ll go to the [medium] as well, then.

And that’s why Nico will never be WC…

    1. @kobe08
Reminds me of Abu Dhabi ’10, Alonso covering Webber instead of doing his best race.

      1. +1 That’s a good one.

      2. Yep! I remember something about that… but I thought it was bad tactics by Ferrari, back then.. Driver or Team fault, it is always hugly! :D

        1. @kobe08
It was attributed to the team in that case, their top strategist (if I remember his position correctly) was fired because of it. I didn’t mean to imply that Alonso doesn’t have a winning mentality, just that the situation was similar.

  13. Reading the transcripts from above and previous races it appears to me that Lewis needs a lot of coaching with his settings from Bono compared to other drivers.

    1. Which is supposedly not allowed. Here are the restrictions on driver coaching.

      http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2015/02/f1-driver-coaching-via-radio-what-is-and-is-not-allowed-in-2015/

As far as braking is concerned messages concerning the following are (supposedly) not allowed.

      Braking points.
Rate of braking compared to another driver.
Rate of braking or application of brakes in general.
      Car stability under braking.

I don’t see how this can be reconciled with the following exchange between Bonno and Hamilton

Bonnington: “Front brakes are on the limit. We need B-bal 56 or do some management.”

Hamilton: “Let me know when I can get back on my brakes, man.”

Bonnington: “So you can start to push again. Go bite point three. HPB switch change coming up.”

      1. Isn’t that so the brakes don’t fail though, which is allowed.

        1. No to the substance, and no to the implication. There is no loophole in the rules saying “In spite of the above prohibitions on driving coaching with respect to brakes, this can all be ignored on safety grounds”.

And there is no “safety” involved in a team instructing a driver on the optimum brake balance. If a drivers brakes are overheating and in danger of failing his team can tell him that, and he can deal with that as best he can. Probably by slowing down. The point of all the brake coaching is not “safety” but the quickest possible lap times.

          1. Well if that list on JAonf1 is what’s written in the rule book then brake balance is something of a grey area as it’s not specifically mentioned. I would say the only one it could be attributed to is ‘car stability under braking’, but I don’t know if the context has to be included too, as the radio message wasn’t actually about car stability.

          2. George, car stability under braking” sounds remarkably like “brake balance”. And then there is the catch-all “application of brakes in general”.

          3. Well I assumed ‘application of the brakes in general’ concerned the physical action, and as I said the actual message wasn’t to do with stability on the brakes, although that would certainly be a byproduct of the change.

I’m just trying to play devil’s advocate here, the fact they haven’t been brought up on it suggests that there is a loophole.

      2. Ok, just before anyone suspects; me and rm are not the same guys. Just wanted to put it out there since we referred the same article and the same lines from the radio chat and posted at the same time :)

      3. Maybe this ‘coaching’ happen to other driver too since not all radio are broadcast.
But surely this will happen a lot more when a regulation is not forced.

      4. Hahaha you really, really hate the guy, don’t you?

        1. Hello, Mr Pot!

I’ve been pointing out on a regular basis this season that both Mercedes drivers and the Mercedes pit wall, not just your beloved Hamilton, seem to be given free rein to flout the rules against driver coaching. Hamilton just happens to be the illustrative example in this case. It’s been Rosberg in earlier races.

    2. That’s nonsense… If your Race Engineer tells you, you have a high temp in your brakes and to switch to a certain engine mode so your car doesn’t blowup that isn’t coaching. It’s called being a Race Engineer. He didn’t ask what mode he should use. He as just told. When trying to pass Ricciardo he asked Bono to be ALLOWED to use the Race Mode for another lap because that mode isn’t used throughout the race. Only in certain situations to overtake. Qualifying lap for instance is when they would use that. Lewis got in trouble with the team last year in Spain for using that mode without permission to keep ahead of Nico.

  14. I just found a video showing Massa about one or two meters behind his grid spot, hence needing another formation lap: https://youtu.be/cKGn1HDOqrU?t=3m34s

  15. Usual admission of guilt by Maldonado. Obviously Perez’s fault that one.

    1. At least he didn’t blame Williams. He’s obviously learned something! (Or not.)

  16. Well done Danny. You know what a podium means.

What does it mean? He’s not going to be whipped in the closet tonight?

    1. Perhaps it’s a condition of his contract – if you get a podium, we’ll give you a seat next year. Or perhaps more $$$$.

      1. Well that would make more sense :)

        1. Consider gay activity are forbidden in where Kvyat came from, Horner privately whipping him do make sense. @rpiian

          1. Look at this ignorant foreigner! “Gay activities” are not forbidden. Only propaganda of such activities to non-adults is. :)

It seems to me that Toro Rosso has a habit of being a bit mean to Kvyat. Maybe they want to push him out to make room for Verstappen or Sainz?

    1. Yeah. What’s up with that? He’s pretty much on par with Ricciardo. You would think they would get excited that he’s already so good in his 2nd season in F1. Since Ricciardo outperformed their previous star, they should be over the moon. At least he knows how to make starts.
From how they treat STR drivers though, I think they would like to make room for Verstappen, not Sainz. When was the last time a driver blatantly undercut his teammate?

    2. Toro Rosso or Red Bull?

Kvyat was on medium tyres while Verstappen was on soft tyres at that point. Verstappen being faster was normal.

  18. It’s very telling that Nico initially refused to get on the Option tyre and battle Vettel… He’d rather mimic Lewis’ strategy and get on the Prime just because Lewis went on the Prime. SMH

  19. That radio transcripts only show how poor Rosberg race was. Every time the team was asking for more pace. Not forgetting his ridiculous decision to stay on the mediums.
And after a crappy race Lewis still saved something. A certain win throwed away but at least he acknowledged his mistakes e said sorry way before recovering to 6th.
And it amazes me what a red suit does do to what people think of driver. Suddenly everithing is forgotten.

    1. More like suddenly people who care about Ferrari also care about what you do and don’t forget everything from race to race.
If you meant 2014 as “everything”, case in point.

    2. @edmarques

it does help that he’s won two races on merit in the second and, in Hungary, third best car on the grid. He’s not throwing his toys out of the pram, he’s saying all the right things, and has brought a fresh energy to the team — he even has Kimi smiling and “passionate” about staying at Ferrari.

I’d put even money he finishes ahead of Rosberg in the WDC, especially if Ferrari improves the engine again for Monza.

    3. A red suit nowadays comes with a 2nd 3rd best car on the grid. So when you go onto win races with that or stand on the podium regularly, hard to find any fault.

    4. And it amazes me what a red suit does do to what people think of driver. Suddenly everithing is forgotten.

What should we forget? Vettel doesn’t have to make apologies for being the best driver in the best car for 4 years in a row.

As a bonus, he shows this year he doesn’t need the best car to win.

  20. I find it telling that Nico refused to go on the Option tyre to take the fight to Vettel and instead chose to mimic Lewis in his strategy with the Prime tyres. It’s like he doesn’t care what position he finishes in as long as it’s in front of Lewis… = LAME

    1. Or perhaps he was concerned of Hamilton getting the undercut by pitting earlier.

    2. Dr3w, you posted twice.

  21. 15 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington You are very quiet Bono.

That was hilarious, considering how many corners the Hungaroring has

    1. Don’t talk to me throughout the corners man!

      1. I heard Hulk say “don’t talk to me on the straights” !!!

  22. 11 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Unless we can close the gap to Raikkonen we’ll extend the…
11 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Interrupting
Don’t tell me again. Don’t tell me again. I’m trying.

so clearly the Ferrari’s were moving, it seems once they are in fresh air they have serious race pace.

  23. Surprised that Vettel’s radio literally have nothing.

Vettel just drove his own race even after the SC was in.

    1. I don’t know how silent it was. There is generally not much radio from Vettel and Ferrari in transcripts anyway. But this time Ferrari mentioned that they only told him about lap times occasionally. And once the safety car was on and then off track they just kept silent.
